302 Headers

Did some searching already. Am I correct in that I have to pull left engine mount and bracket and jack up engine to install passenger side header on 302 F150 ? Turned out that used exhast system won't go right in as doner truck had rear tank and mine has the long central one. Oh well. The price was right. Am going to remove the two small cats that had been installed and re route both down the right side. Hope the little mufflers aren't too loud. I suppose clamps for them would be better than welding in case I don't like the sound. Anybody need some good cats ? Any suggestions about heat. I drive this thing as much as 6 hours straight without stopping and am concerned wiith cabin floor and starter getting to hot. Starter shield - header wrap - floor insulation ?

I put a set on my 2wd 150 a couple years ago. They were a total pita.I undid both motor mounts and picked it up,mad it much easier.I also had to notch the crossmember that goes between the radius arm mounts, and my trand crossmember so I could run the 2.5 inch pipe straight.
I wouldn't worry too much about heat,I have driven mine alot and never had any trouble with heat, the underhood space with the 302 is pretty great, and the airflow it gets through the grill and under the approns keeps the temps in check I think.

Have been out messing with it. Definately going to have to pull right side mount and bracket at the very least. I think Godzilla tightened that mount bolt.

Just got that bolt off. Now if I only had someone to hold a wrech on the other end to get the bracket off. Hope to have it all done but the one pipe mod today. Think I shoud put in a crossover tube or not worth the trouble ?

I think if you are putting headers on you should run dual exhaust, you may loose some of what you gain with the headers by using a crossover and single exhaust.

They sure didn't plan on anyone having to remove that motor mount bracket. Finally got everything off. Bracket, mount and starter. Jacked motor up just a little to the left and the header went in. Using what I have for the time being I cut out the cat as I don't need it on a 77 to pass inspection. Cutting up old right side pipe I get a nice side dump halfway back before the rear wheel. Will go get a long straight section to stretch that back behind the wheel. Will go ahead and do the same for the second pipe and hang it next to it and probably take to a muffler shop and have them bend up a piece to hook it up from left header as it will take a bit of work to turn that thing sharply to the right and then it has to go up and over frame and turn to the rear. Anybody have anyu advice as to how close to steel gas tank it can get before being hazardous ? There is only about a 1/4 clearance on crossmember. Should that be a worry or should I notch it a bit ? All help appreciated.

Installation complete. Did dual pipes exiting in front of rear wheels. Started fine but I forgot how loud a pair of glasspacks are. A little noisy for my taste. Will replace later as funds allow. A definate increase in power snd torque. Will have to readjust idle and maybe timing to get the best out of it. Will take my camper for a little run down the road and see if this has helped. Now to locate a good 4 barrel to sit on the Edelbrock intake.
