I bought my truck in September of '08 with 63k miles on it. In November, I replaced the batteries with brand new ones from Wal Mart. In the past couple months, I have not driven my truck a lot since it was in the shop getting the oil cooler replaced, egr delete installed, etc. I have noticed that since I got it back from the shop, the fuel pump seems to run a little longer and it takes the glow plug light longer to turn off. Also it cranks harder at the start. If it has been sitting a few days, my Scanguage will show it is charging 10 volts or so until i drive it for probably 5 minutes, then it will pop up to 13 or 13.5 volts. Is this a case where I need to replace the batteries or is something else going on with the alternator or other electrical component?
Maybe try charging each one overnight and see how the truck acts the next morning? Not sure how long the truck is driven after starting....so it's possible the batteries aren't getting a good charge. Sounds like they should still be under warranty if you do have an issue.
No charge/low volt is normal operation on start. Alt isn't commanded on until glow plugs time out. It does sound like they are sagging more than most. Are they 850+ CCA?
I believe they are 850+ CCA because I know I looked on this forum before I bought them and a lot of folks recommended the batteries at Wal Mart since they had enough CCA.
It's pretty common to see 14v or more once charging starts. Might want to double check battery connections and grounds. Also check connections at back of alternator. If it's sitting some ( few days here and there) several guys like to use battery tenders to keep them topped off. Truck starts better and battery's last longer. I agree with charging and checking again also. If you are checking volts with a meter be sure to disconnect one of the cables. A good battery will cover up for a bad one if they are connected together when you are checking them.
