First, welcome to FTE. You've found what is probably the best forum for these trucks and this specific engine.

Now, let the free-for-all begin.....

(You'll see what I mean after a few posts.)

My vote is for BTS or DP tuner. I've run both, and they both are awesome in their own ways.
Stay away from the "canned" tuners. Superchips, Hypertech, etc...
You'll get more for your money with a good chip.

Welcome to FTE Justin. I'd suggest you hang around and do some reading here. There's lots you can learn. As a general rule, the off the shelf stuff you see advertised and sold at your local stores or in the big magazines won't be your best chip. One of the custom tuners we like here will do you a much better job and can fine tune the chip to your specific truck, as well as giving you a choice of what tunes you want.

Now with that said, you need to determine what exactly you want from a chip and how much you're willing to spend to get there. The custom guys can get you tunes for a stock set up or tunes for a bigger turbo and injectors.

Typically we always recommend you get a 4" turbo back exhaust or larger and switch to a different air intake than the stock set up. Then add a set of gauges, (boost, pyro, and EGT) so you can monitor the condition of your engine, then get a chip.

If you're just starting down this road, start by looking into intake, exhaust and gauges first. That will give you time to do some reading on different chips. Riffraff diesel, a site sponsor, has good prices on intakes and exhausts, as well as gauges, so there's a good website for you to browse.

Feel free to ask any questions you may have, but as far as the best chip goes, that's a matter of opinion, circumstance, and your overall goals.

Thanks Rob. I got interrupted while I was typing, and when I came back, I had meant to explain that pyro was exhaust gas temperature. But my some timers must have kicked in and all I remembered was something about EGT so I typed that and ran with it. Tranny temp isn't really as important in my opinion with a ZF-6, but other opinions may vary.

Either that or pryo is really, really important.

Call it personal preference, but I'll take Merle Haggard over Barry Gibbs. I'm also probably one of the few who has a Bob Wills CD in the truck.

Of course this just verifies what I said earlier. Everyone's got their own opinion of the best tunes.

Don't have any Bob Wills, but I have the tune that ol' Waylon sang about him.

I have pretty-eclectic music tastes for an ol' f@rt!

Second-stringers, the lot of 'em. Vernon Hawley, Jr. is the real deal.

Actually, I think Delbert McClinton is really the "real deal"!

And yes, I keep one of his CDs in the truck, too.

Hey, wait a minute! This thread is about tunes!

Can you say, "Hi, Jack"?
