for a short answer, no. you need a recommended group of mods so you can safely run a chip. not that a chip WONT work on a stock truck, it certainly will. however the exhaust temps will SKYROCKET and you can easily burn up your engine. to start off, you need a set of gauges. the standard three on the a-pillar is boost, EGT and transmission temp. now you know what temps you are running, you will see that you are getting very hot, very fast. the next two mods should be done together, which is exhaust and intake. that is about all you need to safely run a chip, however you will have a mushy feeling transmission. so, a valve body is recommended.
as for the chip, a DP tuner chip is the hot ticket it seems now. im upgrading to one after a few other mods.
dp tuner has the best chip. You can visit his web site and give jody a call and he is great at talking with you and seeing what will be best in your situation, he knows his stuff. Most people at least to an intake and exhaust to let there truck breath better. The exhaust you can get for 350 and intake for around 20. Also you should have some gauges, egt, boost, and trans temp. They are about 300 for everything. Do some searching on here and you will find everything you need to know about all this stuff. Good luck
about $50 shipped. excellent quality and awesome looks.
the intake, yes i mean the filter. some guys replace their stock leaky airbox with an AIS from Ford that has a cool-designed filter, for about $200 and the new airbox. most of us guys just use a huge open-element filter that is $20, and it lasts forever. here is a pic of it.
I would change to what strokin has if I where you, that K and N lets an amazing amount of dust through. With that much filter area the 6637 flows better.
yes, defanitely. leaky stock box+ leaky filter isnt very good. these engines consume the equivalent of 20,000 gallons of air for every gallon of fuel. i dont want an oiled filter in my engine. that super vacuum produced in that intake tube has the ability to pull off the oil from the filter if oiled too heavy. with the oil comes the dirt.
4x4 IS RIGHT!!
