TS Performance any good?

I recently purchased a ts 6 position chip stock, 50, 75, 100, 140, and high idle. And am having second thoughts on weather its safe to run or not. I didnt want to sacrifice the life span of the truck. The only other mods on the truck are 4" MBRP 6637 filter and some gauges. I guess the question is is this chip any good and will it shorten the life span of the truck.

The lifespan issue is a hard one to answer because there's some many factors that come into play. One VERY important factor is how you use your right foot. Since you've got gauges, USE THEM!!! The TS chip is a great chip and very functional. I'm running one with some custom tunes on it. There are many others on this site that have a TS chip with and w/o custom tunes. They don't have a fancy digital switch like the DP tuner and not as many options, but are just as good. As others have done, run the off the shelf TS tunes and after you get some more modding done, have it custom tuned by Tony Wildman, Cale Thompson at BTS, Bill at PHP, or anyone else that tunes using the TS chip, and then really hone in on the power.

Good luck and enjoy!!

What Ryan said. The TS is a mild chip. I wouldn't worry too much. If you get bored with it or want more, send the chip to Tony Wildman and let him burn some tunes on there for you. Glenn just had his TS chip re-burned by Tony, maybe he'll come along and tell you what the difference is like. Just watch your gauges and you'll be fine.

last week i had a big load on, right a 36500 lbs and had it on the 75 hp setting and was in 4th gear going up a good grade at about 2350 rpm had it on the floor and heard a bad whopping sound under the hood. any idea what that was, and is it safe to tow that heavy in 75hp setting.

Heck, if you can return it and haven't installed it, send it back and get one direct from PHP or TW. I got one from PHP and am sending it back to change the tunes that I got (2 tow & 2 play tunes instead of the 1 & 1 I have now). One of the most important things to me is the longevity of my engine, and getting strong tunes that are still safe is VERY important to me. That said, if you have a mild tune but drive like a maniac it won't the the tunes that gives you problems.

Can you tell us more about your truck? Early 99 or a 99.5+? Stock turbo? Stock injectors? SRW or Dually? Stick or auto? The more detail the better, and the better our answers can be.

What you likely heard is known as turbo surge... and IF that's what it was, yes it's bad. But it can be easily remedied as well.

How high did your EGT's get? If you've got the pedal to the floor and are still slowing down, that's not a good idea. Usually the heavy tow settings are around 40 so you don't overfuel or raise the EGT's too much. You might consider trying the 50 setting, or just calling Tony or Bill and talk to him about writing a tune for those kind of loads. Was 36k trailer weight, or combined weight?

Bad sounds under the hood are never a good thing. Can you give us a better description of the sound? Judging by your RPM's, I'd also consider changing to a 4.30 or even 4.88 rear end if you tow those kinds of loads up steep grades very often. I don't have any hills around me, but I'd think a 4.30 rear would help with that kind of weight. It will just hurt the MPG's empty.

2000 f350 4x4 ex cab long bed dually 6 speed, 4:10 ls gears every thing stock except chip, air filter, exhaust and gauges. I have replaced rear spring with custom built 2 ton springs. (rides like a bitch, but can pull loads like that and not squat) other than that stock and 106,000 miles

put the egt gauge in the day after, 36500 was total weight. the sound was a sucking spitting kind of squeel that only happens when going up steep hills. rpm sagged a little but never under 2000.

Got a link to the turbo surge sound clip Brendan?

If it's surge, that is something that is common with a chip and easily cured, but it's bad for your turbo until you do get it fixed.

I made the mistake of extra heavy rear springs once. Next time check into a set of rear air bags. Air them up when towing, and let them down when empty. It will save your kidneys when driving empty.

My mechanic claimed the air bags would blow out, didnt think he would lie to sell labor since springs are easier to install than bags. Maybe he doesnt know that much (he does drive a hd chevy)

I found this one:

You don't hear the surge until the end.

It's very likely with a heavy load, hill, & stock turbo he was getting massive surge. Fairly cheap & easy fix is the "Wicked Wheel". There are a number of places that sell it (under various names, but all the same) but you can find it at Dieselsite.com at THIS LINK.

Listen to the link Brendan found and let us know if that sounds like your issue. If so, the wheel in the link above (instructions on install are on that page as well) will cure the issue.

As for the air bags, that's what all the big rigs run grossing 80k and you don't see those blowing out. I've hauled a 22k dump trailer with mine aired up to 80 psi (they max out at 100). No big sag in the rear end for me, and I let them down to 40 when I emptied the trailer. I think that Chevy might have gotten to your mechanics head.
