good day does any know where i can buy a timeing cover for a 400 m motor? to make a long story short after fighting to replace the timeing gear set and front plate and trieing to install the water pump i found one threaded bushing stripped in the front that holds the w/p on [there is 2 of them between the w/p and the oil pan i cant seem to find them isted any where thanks
If a stripped bolt hole is the only thing wrong with the cover, what about using Helicoil or Recoil threaded inserts to repair the hole?
Most auto parts stores have or can get them.
hi mike thanks for the reply the plate is not thick enough to heli-coil it and the threaded bushing is to thin to redrill/tap and being a "mounting/w/p sealing bolt" i thought of trieing a threaded
insert but the head would protude above the plate interfearing with the gasket seal i dont see how i can fix this with out going with another plate or 460 swap option
D6AZ-6B070-A PLATE (CYLINDER FONT COVER) Fits 80/82 351M/400 engines and probably all from the 1970s (D6 part number) but I only have the 80-89 parts catalog and cannot verify that.
Perhaps NumberDummy can find one (he has access to more than I do) but I kinda doubt it; everything I can find says it's obsolete and no dealers nor NOS vendors have any.
If the plate is steel, is there enough room to weld a nut on the backside?
I did a search too and came up with zip. No dealers or obsolete suppliers have any.
That was an expensive part though, last list was $136.00!
ctu yes thats the one and their hard to find if not obselete as mentioned mike i would have to pull the cover again to see if there is enough room but thats a good idea its just such a pain in the a## i will have to see if a magnet sticks as i am not sure if steel or aluminum i am checking jeffs bronco site for 460 swap parts so if worst comes to worst that 400 will be a boat anchor shortly but will have 400 parts for sale
all parts are new edelbrock 4bbl intake/valley pan gasket/comp cam 260 cam/lifters/double roller timeing set/ aluminum valve covers/w gaskets/water pump timeing gasket kit but would have to be shipped from canada and that may be pricy
I have this same engine in my own truck, I think that's one of the reasons why I get attracted to questions like this.
IIRC that plate isn't steel, I'm pretty sure it's aluminum.
You might take it to an engine builder / machinist and ask him what he might suggest (and what he'd charge) those guys have lots of experience with situations like that.
thank you for the reply that seems to be another one of fords "better ideas" thats another option to look at for sure if its aluminum it would be hard if not impossable to weld on

oky doky will advise both ways my mech freind will try to braze a nut to the back side within a day or 2 as they are steel so it should work providing theres enough room regurds joe
