distibutor help

background: 351 C. got a HEI dist. from summit racing. set engine at 10 before tdc. firing order is correct. when i try to start it sometimes backfires and sometimes not. Ive tried everything i can think of. any have suggestions or advice would be awesome.

Timing sounds off. If you have a no start condition(just backfire), I would suspect you set the dizzy in on exhaust stroke instead of compression stroke at TDC.

Make sure you are feeding the dizzy a full 12v. Don't use an ignition resister. You need a coil to match if you don't already.
