Swapping a 460 engine for a 351 - doable?

Hello, Found a 1987 4WD 4 Speed manual F-250 I've been looking for in Denver Co. If the answer to this question is positive I'll fly out there this week and pick it up.

It has the gas sucking 460 engine in it. I want to remove this engine and put in a carb 351.

Is there going to be any major heartache/problem removing the 460 engine and installing a 351 engine?

Thanks in advance for any guidance

Rgds

Well,
You'll have to change the engine perches riveted to the crossmember... and the motor mounts.
And the transmission, clutch, etc...
And the exhaust...at least to behind the muffler.
Then you'll have to change the radiator, hoses and any emissions equipment you decide to/have to keep.

In the end (depending on gearing) you might gain 2 mpg.
And it will never be the workhorse the 460 is.
My truck with 4.10's and a 5 speed gets 8-9 around town and 11-13 on the highway.

Good luck, and welcome to the forum!

My '92 F350 4x4 w/5.8L engine, 3.55 gears and E4OD gets the same mileage

When I had a 4-speed T-19 my engine was really humming in conjunction with the 4.10's.

I would only see 7-8 city, 10-12 Highway.

Didn't pick up much, but it certainly feels much more relaxed on the highway.

Thanks for the advice

Hey,

Its nice to hear confirmed what I read elsewhere from this forum. People seem to like the 460 and from what I was reading elsewhere I can carb this engine. Once a camper is onboard and I'm pulling a 16ft Boston Whaler I may be thankful for that 460 going over the mountains. Heres a pic of the vehicle on the lot. I'm flying out Tuesday to pick it up. Than a long haul back to Florida.

Just a FYI. I would HIGHTLY doubt that truck had 50k on it. I would bet 150 or 250k. And it is carberated. The 460 did not get fuel injection till 88.

And how much are they asking? Better be under 3,000

Mileage and advice

Hi, Yeah I thought that was too low but the salesman assured me it was the actual mileage. I got a CARFAX report on that VIN and it seems to indicate that is the correct mileage. If it turned over 100K it might have been before the 2002 maintenance below, they replaced alot of stuff for a vehicle having only 11119 miles on it. Having said that the interior looks in very good shape, no seat wear or wear on the foot pedels I can see in the photos.

Got any advice on what I could check other than the seat wear and pedal wear to identify if this vehicle has higher miles?

From CARFAX report

Mfg 8/10/87 NICB
12/29/1995 5154 miles Colorado Vehicle Inspection Station
09/02/2002 11119 miles Good Hands auto care Center
(all hoses and belts replaced, valve cover gasket replaced, spark plug
wires replaced, water pump replaced, Drive shaft U-Joint replaced,
Distributor cap and rotor replaced, vacuum switching valve replaced.
12/23/2003 22057 miles Colorado Vehicle Inspection
07/12/2008 47664 miles Colorado Immision Inspection
06/08/2010 54658 miles Colorado Imission Inspection

The truck certainly has more miles than advertised...it turned over in 94 or 95, and was pretty close to the national average miles driven, at 13125 per year...haven said that, the 150000 isn't really bad if it was taken care of and if the price is right at sale time...257000 is most likely

THEY ARE LIARS , CHEATS , STAY AWAY FROM THAT PLACE !
average miles per year is around 12,000 - 14,000 x that by 24 year years and you get 288,000 miles ! consider that it might have sat through the winters up there ( unlikely ) and you may get 144,000 miles !
