A/C Compressor Help!!!
I own a 2000 ford f250 7.3L diesel and when i bought it i was told in order to get AC i needed to run the truck - turn AC on inside cab - then go under hood and hit the compressor clutch wheel with a screwdriver to get it spinning....so i did that a couple times and one day it stopped blowing cold air while i was driving so i havent used it since...now the compressor or clutch has started squealing recently..do i need to just replace the clutch wheel in the front or the whole AC compressor?? is it something i can do myself or do i need an HVAC person or something?

You can replace just the clutch; but with what you'd pay for labor you can get a remanufactured one installed for about the same price. I used to try and sell clutches for the simple fact that I made more on the labor.

Maybe you just need to adjust the gap. There had been a write up on the subject in the past either here, on the Excusion forum, or V10 forum. I don't recall which one. Do a search and you'll find it.

Trey is right. About a 30 minute job. If it has 2 shims take the thinnest one out and try. If only one, then take that one out. My 9 year old used springerpops write up to fix a tractor with the same problem and the same clutch setup.

Thanks guys - that pops site was useful i will try that but my question is if my compressor is squealing already its probably on its way out so it needs to be replaced anyway? or is it just the clutch that is squealing? i cant tell.. the air gap does look i little big could that cause the squealing even when the a/c is not turned on?

gap should be .015-.030 take shims out until gap is within range. then see if it works. Turn outer part of clutch by hand first to see it compressor is locked up. I have ssen the voice coils go out and cause issues. All that can be changed without removing or discharging compressor.

The squealing may be a bearing that the whole clutch rides on.
It happens.....
The bearing can be changed alone, but much more practical is to get an entire clutch assembly, and replace that.
You DO NOT have to replace the compressor to do that, and you will not lose the refrigerant charge by doing so.
The entire clutch assembly can be had for around $115.
