Question about changing 6.0 oil cooler
#16
Thanks for your answers. I actually flushed my system after the dealer installed the new oil cooler. I used vc-9 and got very little out of the cooling system. But towing the week after the cooler was installed I got high EOT's. My delta is only about 8-10 degrees unloaded at 65 mph. But when towing my fifth wheel and pulling long steep grades like Tioga Pass going into Yosemite my oil temperture can reach 245. The coolant will also climb to about 220 but the fan comes on and will cool it to 200 or less and I can get a 45 degree delta which is not good. I'm not thrilled about spending $2000.00 on Bullet Proofs air cooled system but would if I was sure it would work. I would hate to spend that kind of money and still see 240 degree EOT. I'm always having to back off the throttle because of EOT's.

It's hard to say obviously... iirc the motor defuels at 253 - so you are getting pretty close to that threshhold. The BPD cooling efficiency seems very effective to me to me, but we don't have any hills in lower Alabama, much less mountain passes. I've only had it installed about 10 months so I still have a lot of learning to do about specific situations. I can tell you that once that fan comes in, the oil temp drops pretty quickly, but not as quickly as the coolant temp.
It's cooler up there than down here most times of the year, so that would work in your favor as well...
In all honesty, not sure anything will do any better than keeping your foot out of it in that situation...

2004 6.0 F250
I have owned this truck for over 2 years and recently sold it to my boyfriend. I can't begin to list what has been replaced in it with most recently the turbo and head gasket. Now it seems like the oil cooler has gone out. After reading all the post I would like some input on whether I need to go with the 3C3Z-6A642-CA or AA....

There is a company called IPR Research who makes a factory style oil cooler that has larger coolant passages so it shouldn't stop up like the factory one does. I paid 350 for one of them. I don't know what my temp spread is yet because I haven't gottin to drive it very much yet, just around in town. But as soon as I get a chance to do a good long drive on it. I will report my temp spread.

There is a solid alternative...
BulletProof Engine Oil Systems
I have this on my truck and love it... I don't worry about popping an oil cooler, or it getting clogged. No more EGR cooler worries either...
It is pricey though...
