D 60 rebuild

Getting into my truck winter rebuild,96 F-350 cc psd ,Have a 95 manual on disc but does not seem to cover the same pieces I'm finding in my truck.Manual locking hubs,my truck has one nut for bearing preload with a sort of bent wire holding nut secure, disc shows 2 nuts which I am familiar with.Does anyone have a link to setup, exploded view of my system.Rebuild info would be nice.Just finished up ball joints etc and dong final assembly and start on other side.Search came up with rebuild of earlier units and a lot of info about the wire lock tab being unavailable but not much for specs.I have saved alot of links in the past but first d60 rebuild. Thanks

The single nut and locking piece is the auto-hub system. Your truck most likely came with auto-hubs from the factory and was switched to manual hubs later.

I just rebuilt my D60 last week and encountered the same thing. My truck originally had auto-hubs and was switched to manual hubs by the previous owner.

The locking piece just pulls straight out and then you can spin the nut off. Other than the locking piece and single nut, there is no difference compared to the factory manual hub D60.

You will need a 2 3/4 hub socket that is 6-point with rounded edges in-between the flat spots, not the crisp bent edges like regular sockets. (hope I explained that well enough, I can get pictures of mine) Its a specific purpose socket, and I got mine at Carquest.

When swapping from auto to manual hubs, you are suppose to use the 3 piece system. I got a set from Napa for $30 a side. With the auto-hub nut and manual hubs, it appears the locking piece could fall out because of the large amount of space between the hub and the nut.

Hope that helps, I can post a semi- step by step of my rebuild if you would like.

The wire design has been replaced I believe. I still use the old wire/clip design. I put it in my D60 when I rebuilt it.

No pics but let me see if I can help.
The clip is half a circle. It sits in a groove in the nut itself. It aligns the inner groves in the nut with the slot in the spindle.
some o-ring pics help or a small long screwdriver.
use a pic and pop the bottom of the clip out of the groove in the nut. Then the top of the clip should slide straight out of the groove in the spindle.
Once you have that out I use a small long flat screwdriver and a small hammer. Do not hit too hard because you don't want to bend anything here. tap on the grooves/small holes that are all the way around the nut to get it loose.
Once it is loose I use a straight o-ring pick or a test light point to spin the nut all of the way out.
the rest is just normal and will come right out after you get that nut off.

There is a large six sided socket that will fit around that nut also but I have yet to find a parts store that has it or can get it. I have only seen them online.

Great info thank guys, see chris has the same truck but mine is not as nice.Been the truck I wanted for 15 years.Bought it last winter as a project but no time during the summer to start on it.My worker ripped it apart then left and while assembly was trying to figure out what was to keep the wire lock from falling out.Seemed I was missing something.Doing one side at a time and replacing all moving pieces and brake rotors.
Thanks for the help and will be back I'm sure.

Let us know if there is anything else that you need.
A PM usually gets to me quicker as I am busy and not online much anymore. As you can tell from William.
