Spindle nut wrench size problem
I picked up the 4-prong spindle locknut wrench in advance and once I got the hub out I found out it's too large. The locknut is a 4-prong, but about 1/4" smaller on the diameter. Don't quote me, but I think the wrench I used is 66.5mm, and I know it's the one that's listed for a 95 with Dana 44.
I returned the socket to Autozone hoping they would have a smaller one, but no dice.
What kind of nut is this, and where do I get the right wrench?
Dave
I have seen one that look like they have teeth on the bottom.
I know you need the one thats more socket like. 4 pinouts in the inside of it.
You probably have the right one, but are on the wrong piece like i was.
I got confused.
When you pull the locker assembly out, there is another thing that looks like a nut to pull out before you can put the socket in.
I had to smuck mine with a punch to knock it loose.
The blow apart for the warn hub dosnt' get detailed enough.
Should be some wierd looking washer, then something else maybe, then the nut that holds the hub on.
If the wrench isn't for the really-tight outer nut, then I'm really cornfused.

If i was ambitious, id pull it apart and take pictures for you, but its friggen 30 degreeze out here in michigan now.
maybe this will help?

Oh wait, here you go
this looks to be a step by step with pictures

I used a diff socket then that one there on mine.
My problem is that when I got to this step:

The 4-prong wrench I bought (86-96 F-150 Dana 44) is too big. By about 1/8-1/4" in diameter, such that when I engaged one prong in the locknut the opposite one was outside the nut and the other two prongs didn't line up.
I see no way to drive off either nut without a proper wrench, and if there is a quick and dirty way I'm not sure I would want to. (the truck is driving fine for now - I'm merely attempting to inspect it for preventive maintenance).
I need to identify the proper tool size. I recall in my research seeing a tiny bit about auto hubs and manual hubs having different size locknuts. But everywhere I go / research they all list just one 4-prong tool for 86-96 Dana 44s.

Mine had the teeth on the inside, which would be your 1/8th inch makeup.

instead of buying by what the package recommends, you need to look at each socket and visually determine which one you need. i have both in my toolbox because the package said i needed the large one with the pins on the face of the socket, but i actually needed the smaller one with the pins on the inside of the socket. i kept the larger one cause the 88 has a D60 in it, and sooner or later i will need it.
