Temp Control Broke?

So the thermostat control in my 97 F150 no longer functions. I can turn it from red to blue easily - it doesnt bind or anything. But I has no effect on the temp of the air coming out of the vents. It feels like it's in the middle; not hot, not cold.

Dealer looked at it and said it's a $55 valve, but that it is 8 hrs labor to replace. Total estimate was $900 to fix it. Anybody found a cheaper route to fix the flow of water thru the heater core?

Dealer said in these trucks it's a real tough job to get into the heater core and other surrounding components. Just my luck.

Pull the temperature **** off of the control shaft. Look at the back to see if it is cracked. Cracked equals the **** slipping on the shaft and the shaft staying put. Common problem on these trucks. Good luck!

also, you are not controlling the water flow. you ave moving a motor drive damper that mixes the hot and cold air to get the temp you want. Firsts check the controller... if not that, the mixing door is broke.

I checked the **** - its functioning correctly. So the problem is apparently the mixing door or actuator, which I'm not going to pay that much to fix.

I wish there was something I could zip-ty to make this full hot for the winter. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated

Did you try turning the shaft without the ****? Also with the fan and radio off to minimize noise. Run the temperature control from one end to the other. you should hear vacuum operating the blend door. If you don't, check the vacuum line that runs through the fire wall on the passenger side of the engine compartment. If you do hear the vacuum operating, then you have a blend door problem. Good luck!

I did turn the shaft back and forth, but the engine wasnt running. So there probably wasn't enough vacuum left to do the job. I'll go start it and try again after lunch

I can hear the vacuum and doors opening/closing when I switch from Floor to Panel, but I can't hear anything when I switch from Hot to Cold. Could this be something as simple as a bad vacuum line? Man I hope so...
