Road trip

Took the old girl for its first long run since I got her. 700 miles round trip pulling my 10ft '67 Shasta camper. Only problem was a loose exhaust clamp. May have to get rid of it though as it is just a little under powered. Rolled along fine at 65 but would not maintain speed even on a gentle grade. Trip was on I 95 in North and South Carolina and some 2 lane to the coast. Just can't see this thing pulling very well up into the mountains where we go camping a lot. Even another 20 to 30 hp would help. Have electric fan installed and may try some headers but that's not going to help enough I don't think. A small 4 barrel ? Only averaged about 8 mpg at 65 pulling 1500 pounds with two people in cab.

8 mpg towing really isnt that terrible for these trucks. What engine do you have?

It's all relative, that would be great mileage with a 460, horrible mileage with a i6 300, what are you running for a motor, tranny, gearing and tires?

302, two barrel, C4, 215-65-15's. I'm really more concerned with power. Just need a little more. Like to go camping about once a month. Most of the places we go to are the mountains of north Carolina. It's no fun getting passed by a semi going up hill.

A 302, my favorite engine! Mine had an aftermarket high rise intake manifold and a 600cfm Holley and hauled like crazy. I did start with a stock block from the local auto parts store and used the original exhaust manifolds.

If you can post the Axle code from the warranty plate (on driver's side door or door jamb) we can probably tell you what it came with from the factory....

A set of headers, aluminum intake and smaller 4v carb will get you 30HP and make that trip a lot nicer. I'd think you could do that for under $500.

I would also do a compression (or maybe leak down) test to see if it's in a decent condition.

It sounds like something aint' right.

I got a 78' with a 351m, v8 4 barrel elderbrock carb and just got back from a 400 mi trip haulin a fully loaded 73' camper, and a utility trailer and did proab about 10-12 mpg... which for me isn't bad for having so much weight.

You sure you don't have a bad cylinder anywhere? I had a small crack on my exhaust valve on my number 1 cylinder, and once I had the heads re-built it was a night and day difference. Anyway best of luck.

Will do a compression and leak down test as soon as rains stop here. Need some exhaust work so can proably fit some headers into budget for then ( Flowtech 1 1/2 in big enough ?) Is there a factory intake and or carb ( used items) that I could be looking for to keepcosts down ?Any and all help sincerely appreciated. She's a good solid old girl and would like to keep her.

Not sure where in the Carolinas you are but I keep an eye out on the Craigslist around Statesville and have seen alot of aftermarket stuff coming out of Race City USA. With all the motorsport stuff in that area you can come across stuff at a half way good price.

I'd try craigslist to keep the costs down. Factory 4v intakes typically go for more than the aftermarket ones.

Summit has some decent deals right now.

Just scored a set of hedman headers with complete duals, Edelbrock performer intake, some side marker lights, seat belt and some aluminum trim for under $100. GOOD DAY. Have to lengthen the pipes as they came off a shortbed and cats had been installed. He has an old 351 sitting there thats blown but I was wondering if the heads would fit the 302 and would they help it breathe better. Truck he has is a 78. Engine and trans gone and a few little pieces missing that I got. If anybody is looking for trim or interior parts let me know. I'm going back soon to get the roof off it so I can remove the sun roof that had been put in mine. PM me. Alan
