When others have posted getting 15+ mpg on the highway with their V10's, I was skeptical. Now, after 5 years of ownership, I took the V10 for the FIRST time (with no load, camper, boat, etc) on a long trip. I was astounded that by driving 65-68, I averaged 15.45 hand-measured mpg after 350 miles. Every other trip I've taken in the past was loaded with something or pulling the boat.
Just to prove my point from years ago on these forums that "speed kills" Super Duty mileage, I averaged about 75 mph coming home and mileage dropped to 13.2 mpg. So, if you want MUCH better mileage, drive 65 mph and live life easier at the pump, or "pay to play" at higher speed.
FYI, this truck is a 4x4 auto and Supercab in Lariat trim. Not exactly a fuel miser configuration
I average 11.5 towing my race car on a open trailer and a bed full of parts and weekend stuff (6+k). This is much better than I ever epected. I average around 65-70 mph on the towing trips.
The problem is not being ABLE to keep your foot out it.
It's just too much fun having 415 cubes to play with at will. And there are so many Dodges to show that too.
But yes, if I'm unloaded, driving like a sane human being on the highway w/ cruise, I get about 14. That is with all the ignorant crap on my truck. So yes, it is CAPABLE of getting decent gas mileage. In my case, the owner isn't.
60 to 65mph. my 05 v10 now gets 13.46 hand calc. on trips it's almost 15.+ or - a few tenths. towing it's always 10 mpgs. the properly set tuner helped with 1 mpg
on a p/s my wifes v6 liberty only gets 15 steady

Captchas, I have been doing that for a couple tanks now. I can say it really has made a difference. I can easily go 5 days now before I have to fill up. I have been getting a extra 50 miles out of a tank. Keeping it under 2K rpm and 60 or below on the highway has been dramatic.
There is only one problem though. I feel like a heroin addict goung trough withdrawl. You know the itches, nausea, and creepy crawlies. My right foot constantly twitches. I tell myself....NO NO NO....remember You have to run SUPER UNLEADED with the SCMT.....and last we looked it was $3.65.....patients.
I'm just glad I'm not paying for fuel right now. My baby is just sitting in the driveway with Stabil in the tank, feeling neglected. Getting great mileage though, I think I have gotten about 2 months out of this tank so far.
I can still satisfy my right foot craving over here though.
unreal, i'm close to qt of store and start, a fog job and a set of jack stands. vespa any one. that is if i can find one , the guy here is already sold out.
work is 40 miles each way, food store is 10 away. tg a farm is only 1 and i know the farmer. any one remember milk fresh from the cow? man is that good.
Yes with the price of gas going nuts I have so many people say to me, "you must be sorry you got a V10 ". It is so bizarre that people believe because it has 10 cylinders that is a gas hog. My 88 460, now that was a gas hog. This little itty bitty 415 justs sips the gas like a debutante enjoying her first glass of champagne ( about the same price as gas now ) . Yesterday a neat old Jag passed us. It had the big V12 emblem on the back and I said to the wife, " look..... a V12, he must burn more gas than us." Take care.
I know what you mean WrenchTraveler. I get that all the time. There is a look of surprise when I point out I get ~14 on the highway and the old F150 I had with the 6 cylinder only got ~15.
I get between 15.5 and 16.5 mpg with my 7.5 klb F350 on my mixed city/highway daily commute ... its a diesel ... This is an improvement of about 10% over my 99 V10 on the same roads. It was the same truck configuration as my new diesel and about a thousand pounds lighter.
The new truck is better than the wife's Grand Cherokee with the 318 in it, and my truck is twice the weight! This truck is rivaling the mileage of the '97 Grand Caravan 3.8 V6 I traded on my original SD.
