BTW, I did read thru some of the sticky re GPR, Glow plugs, etc. Great stuff.

My "service engine soon" light went on awhile back(month ago), I checked the codes, they were 1391 and 1393. I ordered the Stancor GPR and a fuel filter and worked on my E350 van 2 days ago. BTW, I live in Southern California, no cold weather issues here, at least lately.(supposed to be in the 100s in 2 days....crazy!) First time I did any of this type of stuff(glow plug, electrical, etc) on my 1997 diesel E350. (Van has 170k miles)

I checked/tested my GPR.(Had been replaced by previous owner, looked in pretty good shape) Turned key to on, put voltmeter positive clip on the switched +12 volts that is fed to the glow plugs when they are supposed to be on. This shut off after approx. 90 seconds, which told me from my research here that the GPR was fine.(I didn't put the Stancor on since I was confused as to what wires to hookup where.) I then pulled each of the 4 glow plug connectors(5 pin each, 2 on each valve cover, front and back)(you guys with trucks have it a lot easier than us with the vans) I tested for ohm resistance and got between .5-2 ohms on each front and rear pin of each 5 pin set. Changed the fuel filter, put everything back together and checked for codes. Now I had 1391, 1393, 1396, 0113 and 0472 codes! Researched a little and realized I forgot to attach the connection to my air filter setup and that I had to erase the codes! Hooked that up, erased the codes and checked for them again…NO CODES!!! Cool!! I haven’t driven it around yet and they might come back on???....anyhow,
I’m curious that IF I HAVE fixed the problem, I wonder what it might have been? A bad connection which “cleaned” itself with me removing and reattaching the connectors?

Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you everybody for having taken the time to help all of us “newbies”, etch around here.

Cali trucks (vans) use big straps across the GPR. The PCM looks for the voltage drop across the strap and determines if there is enough current flowing to the glow plugs. If not it throws 1391 and 1392. Once cleared I think it takes 2 or 3 drive cycles before the error codes would appear again.

Federal trucks have 5 wires going to the GPR (1 big, 2 medium and 2 small) and Calif trucks (vans) have 7 wires going to the GPR (1 big, 2 medium and 4 small) so make sure all the wires are hooked up, especially if another owner replaced it with the wrong GPR.

7 wires to the GPR for Cali vans? I will try to check this tomorrow. Drove my van today, the engine light didn't come back on but now my A/C isn't working!

I'm wondering if something got disconnected or if I popped a fuse somehow. Gonna check that also in the morning.

Well, the 5 codes did come back a few days ago. But I checked them today before sending this reply and now I only have the 1396 code.
