Hello my fellow Ford fans. I took the family and inlaws out to Lurray Caverns today. It is a very nice family outing. I had to drive very carefully through Shanadoa on the way back. I used the manual shift option on all hill declines. Upon arriving you can actually smell brakes burning from other vehicles. I switched from 3 to 4 often and even switched down to 2 a few times. My transmission stayed within good temperatures and I saved my brakes.
The really neat thing about using the manual option is that you can do it in M or Drive. Use it in drive and you can limit the gears therefore preventing the truck from gaining too much speed. The truck performed great. Even my car **** father in law who believes in foreign cars was really impressed with the super duty performance today.
On a sad note, we had to drive through the mountains twice. There was a fatal motorcycle accident. My sympathies to the rider and his/her family.
The gear lock out feature in [D] and manual mode options are a great addition.
GM has had the manual mode in the HD trucks for several years (2006 duramax at least) so I'm glad Ford decided to join in.
I use manual mode most of the time but that's a story I won't get into in your post.
It's good for hilly back roads so the transmission will stay in a gear.
An issue I have on rolling hills is it will shift 6, 5, 6, 5, 6, 5...etc and it gets annoying plus wear and tear on the hardware.
Throw it in [M]-6 and the turbo will keep your speed nearly perfect.

I've never tried to throw mine in to M to hold a gear before, but I've bumped the shift lock down in D before. I have played around with M, but never really "used" it. How hard will it hold the gear you want it in? I am sure there are some parameters that it holds to and once you're out of a set range (load/RPM?) the transmission shifts anyway.
I was also up in the mountains last weekend and stumbled upon the manual gear shifting. Another thing I was doing was simply using cruise control. In cruise control, the truck was automatically downshifting and the only time I had to brake was when the cars in front of me were slowing down.
Good point about cruise. I was talking about Skyline Drive. That stretch of road is nuts. Steep hills and sharp curves. It's really fun on a motorcycle going very slow. Lot's of sport bikes get destroyed there. Cruise wouldn't be right for that type of drive. You move along at 30 in 3rd then suddenly downshift to 2nd and hit brakes.
Fontana try going up skyline drive in a 5.4 towing 7500lbs and right at 15k gcw. I have a manual and did not have to worry about shifting. 2nd the whole way up she was screaming
