im looking for good post regarding transmission swaps from e4od to 5speed. i have a 94 150 2wd 5.0. im haveing problems with the auto and i dont want to waste the time and money to put another used auto in and may have the same problem. i do have acess to plenty of used parts at a local junk yard and i would like to make just one trip to get everything i need. but what would be my best tranny to get and what years and models couold i chose from? i would like to do this the right way so how or were could i get the auto delete kit for the interior for the shifter. also my truck is a ext cab so what would i have to do with the drive shaft and what about my exuast? any and all inputs would be great thank you
thanks for that link and that will help alot but im still wondering what would be the best choices of tranny from a stock truck as there is so many at the local junk yard. what years and motor sizes and whats the differance in gear ratios am i looking at
You will need to look for either a Mazda 5 speed or the heavier duty ZF5. Both were introduces around 1988 untill 1996. Both are overdrive 5th but the ZF5 has a very low 1st gear.
You would need to look for a 2wd trans that was behind
a 4.9, a 5.0 or a 5.8.
The Mazda would be found mostly in the F150 (except for the 5.8) while F250 and F350 would mostly have had the ZF5.
A transmission from either a diesel or a 460 gas engine will not work.
You will probably need the cross member, driveshaft and you will need the pedal assembly from a `92 or later truck.
If you post your questions on the `87-`96 F series page there are a lot of guys there who have done the swap. Some guys say that you need to change the PCM (computer) to one from a manual but others say that if you leave the transmission range sensor (TRS) off of the E4OD plugged in and in neutral it will not throw a CEL.
thank you for all the great info. i have a ext cab which has a 2 piece drive shaft. will i need to find another ext cab with a 5 speed to get the proprer length shaft? im still debateing which trans to go with. i understand the zf will have the bulldog 1st gear but would the top end still be compatable with the mazda? i sometimes do some towing but nothing heavy as it is a half ton. i just hate to put another used auto in it and i realy miss shifting gear. yeah i will ask more??? about the computer problem in another firum thanks again for the info. also will the manual be in the way of the stock y pipe? i do plsn on putting a custom exuast on it bbut that was going to be after the trans swap if possible
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...ming-soon.html Some good info in this thread.
If you are going to do a manual swap you might as well go for a ZF5 to get the stronger trans. However for the type of use you propose I would think the Mazda would do your job. Also some guys don`t like the "granny" low of the ZF. Exhaust, I would think, would be alright.
Overdrive ratios should be similar.
Can`t give you a firm answer on the driveshaft. The E4OD is huge and is probably a few inches longer than the manual transmissions.
