E4OD trans upgrade ??'s

Advise please.
I have a 92" F-150, 5.0, E4OD, 4X4, and have better than average mechanical skills. I'm planning to replace the engine to a 5.8 and would like to do an upgrade to the trans to 95 specs, and ad a trans-pac kit while I'm doing it.
Having never worked on an auto trans, my ??'s are.
1. Is this do-able for a fearless beginner ?
2. Where can I obtail a service manual specifically for a, E4OD, F2TP-EA ?
3. What special tools should I have, and where do I purchase them ?
Any and all comments/suggestions are welcome.
By the way, the trans was rebuilt 50K ago in 1997. However, I have no idea of what they replaced or upgraded to. But want to check while it's out.

Thanks, hobo.labo

The 5.0L(302) and the 5.8L(351W) have the same tranny bell housing patterns. I currently have the E4OD tranny and the 5.8L in my 90 Bronco, and I am planning on a complete overhaul on my tranny myself. You might want to check out Baumann Engineering at http://www.baumannengineering.com/ I have already purchased their tranny computer and valve body upgrade kit from them and I will be doing the work my self. They have a lot of usefull info about this particular transmision. You might also want to check out High Impact at http://www.high-impact.net/transmiss...gear/index.htm Very informative and I too have purchased products from them. High Impact has a Lot of usefull info in other areas too like gearing too.

As far as the tools, manuals or even video check out Driveline Plus at http://www.technicalvideos.com/about_us.phtml

Hope this helps
I have more info if needed but these few websights should help greatly for what you're looking for.

actually you want to upgrade your trans to 97 specs. most of the upgrades that Ford did were to the thrust washers by changing them to needle bearings in some of the more crucial areas. they also upgraded the MLP/TR sensor and the valve body.

A good source for manuals is ebay

the seals for the internal pistons inthe clutch packs can be difficult to replace and can tear if not installed correctly

the rear case output shaft bushings need to be installed properly

I would not worry about the specific transmission you are working on because you will be building it to a higher spec year

the overhaul can be done by anyone that is meticulious about what they are doing and very organized

there are parts from the 4R100 that can strengthen the E4OD also

Amature/new-be rebuilder

Thanks guys for the help.
Sorry for the delay in the response, was out for a little, but long overdue R & R. I plan on pulling the engine & trans as soon as this Michigan winter subsides. Will find this to be an interesting challenge, never attempted an auto trans B-4.
However, with your help I see no problem. I'll keep you all posted on my progress.

Thanks again for your responses,
