1993 ford explorer starter works fine it starts and runs but the solenoid power wire will not stop supplying power replaced relay on fender still not working right ignition in column is messed up but if you try slowly turning it back it just shuts off any idea?
So the starter motor stays engaged unless you turn the key back to "Off" position? That would suggest it's not a stuck relay since the relay would remain stuck in the Off position. To confirm which side of the system it's on, I'd try starting the truck, then shift to Reverse or Drive. If the starter solenoid disengages when shifted to gear, the issue is on the switch side of the Transmission Range Sensor (TRS). If the solenoid stays engaged, then the issue is between the TRS and the starter.
It stays engaged when in gear I spent 3 hours trying to figure it out and couldn't I finally just wired up a setup for a push button so it can be used it's a family members vehicle and it's the only one they have
Be Careful! My 1993’s switch went 360 while trying to start. This caused the main wiring harness to fry at the switch on the column and totaled the Dash, which totaled the truck. Once I saw signs of smoke I guess the right contacts were welded because disconnecting the battery d/n help. Nor did I ever see a flame but the dash sagged and the front window popped. Basically, while I was firing an extinguisher anywhere I saw signs of smoke.
I did start the truck at the solenoid while it was held in the on position but it dropped dead when the key w/n held on. It was hard to see this happen in seconds after 15 years of good service. I would strongly suggest replacing the switch and solenoid or inspecting them very close “internally”(yes! open them). jow
