this is a 88 7.3 and about to burn it,,,starter is hanging up on flywheel,,,is it that i need shims behind,,,,bolts have a little slop in them and when i do find the right spot when i tighten the bolts down it hangs up again,,,,hope someone has an answer this is a 2 wheel drive 250 and getting tired of squeezing under it
Describe hanging up. Mine will grind and I have to try it in neutral or rock it a bit in park then it will engage. I would like to know how to cure this as well sounds like we have the same problem.
well this will be the third starter from autozone,,,the first 2 i just took out and traded for a new one,,,yes everything is good new batteries new silinoid and the starter will work if i loosen up and leave sloppy,,,when i tighten bolts it hits again,,,,havent felt any vibration but could the flywheel be broke,,,had a 460 that did that but felt the vibration,,,,,im going out to pull the starter one lasttime and see if i can find anything out,,,,,
well pulled thestarter out,,,,,did a test on it and guess its the starter,,,,just seems odd this will be my 3rd starter in maybe a yr 1/2 works now just have to tap with a hammer calling autozone right now and making sure they have one
Best thing about autozone is the lifetime warranty. I've replaced the starter on a 440, 4 times because it will pass a bench test but put a load on it and it won't even grunt.
Had to argue with the sales person last time. He insisted the starter was good because the little machine said so and I didn't know what I was doing. I'd had the vehicle longer that he had been alive and mechanically I had rebuilt it front to rear.

I just found the reason my '03 F150 has been eating up starters since the day I bought it. I purchased the truck from Middleton Ford, Madison, WI, when it was 2 years old. I've put in 5 starters since. The only time I had a problem was in cold weather. Then, the starter would always hang up in the flywheel. I had several local mechanics check everything and nothing was ever found until my local Ford garage went in deep. They found that the original flywheel had been replaced by an after market unit. (Why would someone do that when it was still under warranty?) The after market one had a somewhat different "dish" to it. So, mystery solved at a very high repair cost.

X2 ... a friends father had his 70 something f100 go through starters about every 6 months we tried every brand we could find with no resolve. Finally found the problem when we took the tranny down. At one point someone did the clutch and replaced the flywheel, the new flywheel had 8 more teeth the the stock one. Got the stock one from a junk yard and hasent eaten a starter in the last year and a half
It's cheaper and better to have your stock starter repaired rather than go through a series of "rebuilt" starters, regardless of warranty. I am lucky to live near a good electric motor repair shop, I just got mine redone there. A rebuilt starter from CSK was $180, I paid $80 to have mine gone through.
I wouldn't take electrical stuff from Autobone for free-

You are in it now. Next time go to napa I used to drive by a oriley and autozone and drive 40 miles to go to napa I don't like pimple faced teenagers telling me that I don't know what parts my truck takes . Last time I went to auto zone damn kid kept telling me I needed 3 u joints for my rear driveline for my regular cab 92 doesn't do any good to argue with an idiot
the last time i was in autozoo the guy behind the counter tried selling me spark plugs for me 88 diesel. he swore they would make the truck run better.
the only reason i was in there in the first place was the fuel filter was leaking and i did not feel like leaking $40 worth of fuel going to napa.
