hard shifting

Truck has newerslave, pp, clutch. MC is full. No leaks. Shifting toughest going into 2. I can see my slave moving a good 5/16". I had cheopo ATF in it. I just swapped in mobil 1 FS ATF anda little Lubeguard red. It is much better. Are my synchros bad. Are they hard to change. Any thoughts?

The tranny in my former '91 was starting to have shifting problems. The problem was most noticable when shifting into 1st gear while stopped. I could get into 1st gear very smoothly if the truck was moving at all. When stopped, I would try to go back and forth between 1st and 2nd and the mechainism seemed blocked each way. Again, this did't happen every time when I was stopped and tried to get into 1st gear. It just happened from time to time - just often enough to be aggravating. It seemed to me that the shift rail would not move. I would get a jerk from the transmission as though the whole thing moved. I was fairly certain that the clutch was working properly, so i came to the conclusion that the problem was caused by a bad 1-2 synchronizer.

I know repair kits are available and I have seen descriptions of how to disassemble the transmission. But it looked like more of a project than I wanted to tackle by myself. If I has the right parts and felt like I knew what I was doing, the job could be done in an afternoon - that excludes removal and reinstallation of the transmission. I did consider looking for a used tranny, putting that in the truck and then experiment rebuilding the tranny that was originally in the truck, doing it at my leisure.

That's not much of a specific answer to your question, but it does give some things to condsider as you work toward a decision.

as I mentioned in my first post.....I did a drain and fill and used Mobil full synthetic ATF, $10 a quart..........it is much much better with the Mobil 1 in but still a little off........I am going to guess the syncrhros are worn. I will just drive it till it gives out, maybe keep my eye out for a used M5OD.

Picking up a used one was my thought at the time. But then it occured to me that, if mine had this problems at about 90 K miles, a used one could that the same number of miles or more and I soon would have two poorly shifting trannies.

Why not buy a used one, rebuild it, then install it in your truck?

Does the transmission make a whining noise in any of the gears?

I occasionally have a problem with getting the truck into gear. Double clutching a few times seems to help.

I put the Mobil 1 FS, $10 a quart in on Thursday it is 1000% better.........it might be worth the money for you. I also had 3 ounces of lubegurd Red around that I put in but I am not sure if that did anything
