Ughhhh!!
I have a 97 Ranger 2.3, M5ODwith 100k miles and I'm about to drive from Cal to the east coast. I'm in need of a new clutch, which I can afford--but I also think my synchros are heading south on me (which i can not afford).
I recently changed the fluid (mercon atf) with no change in the shifting feel. Still really hard to shift into 2nd when cold, but gets a little better after it warms up. I also get a "crunch" into 3rd, but still not as bad as 2nd gear.
I could go ahead and change out the clutch only, and maybe switch to a synthetic atf and then hope for the best on the synchros. I guess what I'm asking the elders here is how long can one go with the synchros like this? Is it a grenade just waiting to blow? Or, is this something that can be nursed along with some tlc?
Of course I don't want to be stranded mid trip, but I'm just trying to gauge just how bad this situation is.
I also understand that I'm making an only slightly informed assumption on the synchros, but from all the research I've done here, it does seem to point in that direction...
Other causes?
Thanks for any help in advance.
Drive
As for other causes, i was told that my bad or misaligned shiftforks contributed to the problem greatly.
Good luck.
