Fuel tank strap recall catastrophe!
#61
Not sure but I searched for gas tank straps ( not the best at it) and this thread seemed to be the closest one to ask without starting a new thread on the SD page. I'm sure there is some difference but the straps on the SD are nothing amazing. Pretty much holding a basic 20-25 gallon frame rail tank. Just wondering if anyone here heard of or encountered anything close to 6 bills for straps. I'll do some more checking. Thanks again. Much appreciated

FORD OEM 99-04 F-250 Super Duty 6.8L-V10 Fuel Gas Tank-Support Strap F81Z9054D | eBay
looks like the front or rear strap can be bought for $70. each ..... probably a little different size than the F150.

Love rock auto, it's usually the first place I check but the strap was broke for awhile before I even noticed it. I'm very lucky it has the heavy duty sheild under the tank. I'm 'hoping' with something like this the dealer part might be worth paying a little extra so it doesn't happen again anytime soon. Probably wrong but anyway...Thanks again. Very much appreciated.

I found this thread using the search bar and am digging it back out.
Found the rear strap missing on my '98 F150 4X4 I just got it this year, looks to have been off a LONG time as there was old rust scale on the strap attach hole on inboard side and no marks from a previous install on the T part that would have hooked into the frame. I had filled it completely up several times and had not noticed it missing when I did initial inspection as it was not noticeably marked by wear marks, rub lines, rust lines, etc.
Called Ford dealer in Wichita, my truck was not part of the geographically identified problem areas, so no go and BTW, Ford stopped making the straps.
Went to LKQ here in Wichita KS today, went under 4 trucks in this threads year range and all have corroded and busted rear tank straps. One of the 4x4's had a factory full length fuel tank skid plate. Luckily I was prepared, spun out the bolts with my Milwaukee 3/8 impact, dropped it onto my chest, spat out a lot of dirt and rolled out from under. 24.00 at the counter. Hardest part was lugging it way back to the parts counter.
I will clean it up tomorrow, put some black rubber matting on the rear upper inner area and roll on down the road with only one strap. I could buy the strap set but mine has went a long time as is, if it falls, the skid plate will catch it and then I can do something else if it bothers me to much. I did not bring a tape measure to inspect the corroded straps on the JY trucks. I see there are a few different lengths on rockauto.com. My truck is lifted with larger tires so the plate might have been on mine at one time, but it had to have been LONG ago.
Anyways, I am cheap, I found a solution, upgraded/restored my truck and wanted to share info.
