I never used a 44 before but the 40 sounded awesome on my 1990 F250 w/302.
Was your truck pretty much stock, like single exaust and cats. I am keeping the single exaust and cats. Also my truck has headers so hopefully it sounds throaty.
IF your stuck on Flowmaster, I would get the 44, but it's up to you. The 44 will be louder than the 40... IMO though, I would run something else. Magnaflow, Borla, etc. A "straight thru" style muffler will flow much better than a chambered Flowmaster. Think about how many times the air has to change directions inside a Flowmaster muffler...
EDIT: My buddy has a Flowmaster Super 44 on his 4.6L F-150 with all 4 stock cats. It's extremely quiet thanks to the cats, but has an OK sound.
Ill give you an opinion for a guy that actually enjoys flowmaster. if you keep the cats on, id go with the 40. the headers are going to make it a lot more throaty, and the 44 is going to be obnoxiously loud. The 40 will only be loud when you put it to the floor though so nobody will bother you about it while cruising around. I have a flowmaster 50 series on my truck (351w, no cats, single 3 inch right now) and it sounds like a straight piped 302 when you can on it, and it just has a nice rumble when youre nice to it.
With the stock cats, I would run a glasspack or straight pipe after the cats. The factory cats muffle the exhaust so much that almost any muffler will be really quiet. I agree, anything but Blowmaster.

+1. If the stock cats are staying you're completely wasting your time and money here, it'll still be whisper quiet at anything above idle. Now if you get rid of the cats there are lots of options but DroneMasters don't make it on my list anymore.. had the Super 44 and 50 and hated them.. too much freakin noise, but then my truck has a big cam in it so it's gonna be a bit more obnoxious than a stock motor.
I have an SLP Loudmouth 1 resonator on mine that used to be on my mustang. It is about as loud as you can get, louder than straight pipe. Flowmasters have a drone to them at cruising speed that drives me crazy, also they are not stainless so they rust out, I have seen them lose all their baffles. Go with the magnaflow in my opinion.

It had shorty headers, a single hi flow cat and single 3" exhaust. It had a glasspack on it before I did the flowmaster. The glasspack was ok but it wasn't throaty like the flowmaster. I didn't have any drone issues, surprised to hear people with a cat have drone..
