The other night we left and got about 1 mile down the road when the Engine Light came on and the truck started to miss and shake. Since we were so close, I pulled a U turn and headed back home. As soon as I turned onto our street the light went off and she ran like a top.
After doing some research here I found that it sounded like the Cam Position Sensor. I bought two, replaced it and stuck the spair in the glove box.
I warmed the truck up for about 10 minutes and we headed down the road. We made it about 5 miles and the light came on and the truck started missing once again. Same simptoms as before. I turned around and headed home. About a mile from the house the light went off and it was smooth sailing once more.
When the light comes in the power is very, very low, it doesn't stall but sounds like it's missing very bad.
I'm trying to get my hands on a code reader that will pick up the codes from this truck. The cheap OBDII scanner that I have won't do it. The nearest shop is too far for me to drive the truck to this way.
The truck is an 01 F350 7.3 with 80,000 miles. Any ideas for me? Thanks in advance!
That also sounds like a text book case of a bad ICP sensor. I recently replaced one on my co-worker's truck. It had the same symptoms, but not as severe. I found ICP related codes when read with my old SCT programmer and there was oil in the connection of the sensor. New sensor=all good.
I managed to get the truck to a friend's shop this morning. I found that when the light came off and started missing I could shut the truck off and it would have full power/no light once again.
The first time the code read P1316 and P1247. On the second scanner it read only P1316.
Should I still pick up an ICP sensor? Does it sound like an injector harness issue? I will definitely replace the air and fuel filters while I'm at it. If you all think so I will order the parts and get to work!
Next time it does it, leave it running and unplug the ICP sensor. If it cleans up then that's your problem. It also wouldn't hurt to check the big harness on the driver's side. Mine was loose and dirty. After I cleaned it and tightened it up some of my cold weather problems went away...
Don't overlook the UVCH. That is what mine was doing. You can ohm it out to see. I simply ran codes and posted here, then went to work pulling valve covers. Turned out my drivers side was toast. Changed it and have not had a problem like that since.
Tomorrow I'm going to pull the valve covers and check out the connections. I changed the fuel filter and the bowl was filty. I will report back with my update. Thanks again guys. Nothing like having a truck down.
You may want to check the wiring going to the plug on the valve cover harness on the passenger side.
I noticed the wires on mine going into the nine pin plug were cracking and the insulation was breaking off allowing possible moisture and shorting to occur. I took some liquid paint and coated all of that until I had the time make the proper repair by splicing a new connector into the UVCH plug when I do my glow plugs.
As one other mentioned unplug the ICP sensor on the driver's side head to see if it smooths out. Also, if there is any presence of oil on the sensor or around it that could nail it down as well.

Thanks for the help.
With this new code info, it is sounding more like a UVCH or wiring issue. Looks like you're on the right track now. If you find oil in the ICP sensor connector, I'd go ahead and change it soon. It may not be a problem now, but will in time.
Thanks guys. I unplugged the passenger side harness first to check for any blackened plugs. It was tough to tell, but I will Ohm them out this afternoon. Assuming the readings indicate a problem, I will start pulling the valve covers.
I will also pull the ICP sensor and check for oil while I'm have everything out of the way to remove the valve cover.

The burned pin/plug happens on the connector of the Under Valve Cover Harness (UVCH). You need to remove the VCs to properly inspect the UVCH connectors.
Thanks PaysonPSD. I pulled the driver's side valve cover today and found that while the connection did seem tight, the snap tab broke while I was inspecting it. I picked up a two new harnesses from Ford; I changed the driver's side today and I will change the passenger side next week when I get back home.
I also ordered a new ICP and IPR sensors just incase..
Monday I was able to get everything back together. I installed a new UVCH. I also removed the ICP sensor to check it out. I ordered both the ICP and IPR sensors but have not changed either as of yet. I'm not 100% convinced the UVCH was the issue because when it would act up, a simple re-start would solve the problem.
I have been driving the truck since Monday with no issues so far. When it was acting up, it was VERY frequent; 3 or 5 times during a 10 mile trip.
While I had the ICP sensor out, I did clean the oil off with a towel, I'm not sure if that would have anything to do with it running better? Can the ICP sensor become plugged up?
I'm going to replace and check out whatever you guys suggest. We are planning to leave next week for a 2,000 mile trip with a trailer. I don't want any issues on the road!
