Exhaust sizing

Hi, I have a 97 F150 Lariat extended cab with flareside. I was wondering how big of a diameter the pipe going into the muffler has. I want to order a FlowMaster with one inlet, dual outlet, but I can't accurately measure the pipe. Also, I was looking through Summit Racing's catalog, and saw that they had side exhaust pipes, just curious as to how hard that might be to get setup and put on? I think my truck would look even better with those, and with the FlowMaster 40 series, it would have the sound to back it up! Heh, anyway, please let me know if any of you know anything about the sidepipe deal, it's one pipe on each side, right along the underside of the body right under the doors. Like I said, it should turn out really badass. Alright, if I think of anything else, I'll post, I hope someone can answer my questions. Later.

Exhaust sizing

Ah my first post. Mine is a '97 S/C with the 4.6. I recently had a 40 series flowmaster installed. 1 in, 2 out. The cat to muffler was 2.5 inches and 2.5 out. What he did was increase it to 3 inches cat to flowmaster. Then 2 2.5 out the back with stainless tips. Nice setup. However be warned, at about 1800 rpm there is a distinct rumble inside the cab. To me it's a little annoying. My kids love it. What I don't know is if it's unique to the 4.6, or the S/C, or the 40 series muffler. Curious also is the fact the "check engine light came on about 4 days later. Haven't checked out the error code yet.

Take care,

Thumbs up Exhaust sizing

My 5.4 has a similar set up. It's 2.5 inch from the cat to the muffler (Andretti Turbo). Then I had them size down the outlets from 2.5 to 2 inch. This I ran into 3 inch chrome tips.

I down sized the pipe to make the exhaust not as loud as described in the posts above. This setup gave me a good deep tone without being too loud and virtually no "droning" noise at any speed.

I've had several Mustang GT's with 40 series Flows and they all had an almost unbearable drone at 2000rpm.

But to each thier own.
