2008 SD 5.4:Straight pipe vs Flowmaster?

I have been thinking about doing a straight pipe or changing the factory muffler to a 40 series flowmaster, but am having a hard time finding anyone that has done either. Being that the factory exhaust is 3" all the way back, I dont really see that much to gain by going to duals anyways. I searched threads on here but the ones I found were all a couple of years old. So, has anyone done either? Would the factory cats provide enough backpressure? If so how loud is it with a 3" pipe? The truck is a 2008 F-250 5.4 & 6 speed, is my daily driver and tow vehicle for my 8500lb travel trailer. Just looking for some advice, as I can't afford a full custom exhaust right now and I would really like a little more sound.

Hey Rob, do you pull any trailers with your truck? If so how noisy is it inside the cab with and without a load on it?

I've pull an enclosed trailer maybe 2 times since I've put the exhaust on, pulled the landscaping trailer full of quads a few times, when the bed is empty its pretty loud, when the bed is full of wood or when I have my tonno cover on it isnt as loud.

I took off the factory cat back and replaced it with a 40 series flowmaster dumped out the side of the truck. It was not very loud and had no drone at all. The muffler lasted 2 years before it rotted off, so I replaced it with a dynomax race bullet muffler, adn now its pretty darn loud, and i still have no drone.

Your system is stainless steel so go with a SS performance alternative. Have your local muffler shop cut out the factory one and install. Magnaflow has a pretty close replacement. Sounds good no drone and not annoying.

Don't expect any mileage or HP gains it will only sound better.

What? No one uses glasspacks any more?

Thrush makes a very nice stainless steel glasspack muffler I was considering for my 5.4L when I get home.

Maybe I am old school, but a V-8 with glasspacks just sounds good.

Those bullets sound so amazing. Check it on you tube. Cheap and sound so nasty

When I had my 03 v-10 it had no cat & a flowmaster muffler on it. Sounded cool, may be a little load but not to bad. Hooked on a trailer, was a lot louder. Pulled up a river hill, the truck was so loud could hardly sit in there. Got home & next day straight to muffler shop & got a 30" glass pack put on. Still sounded good & pulling a trailer no head aches or talk of divorce if some thing wasn't done about the noise. That's just my experience,Colin.

WOW! I didnt know they made such a thing as a stainless glasspack! Do you think it would sound good as a single 3"? I had some 2 1/4" duals on my old 1980 f250 and they were LOUD! I dont remember who made them but they "cackled"- sounded awesome. I just dont want THAT much noise in the cab. Maybe the newer ones are a little better nowadays........

Times two for me! I prefer the sound of long glass packs to any of the new hollow sounding muffs. My favorite of all muffs is the Dynomax three chamber SuperTurbo muffler. All the sound of a new glasspack with the volume cut down a bit and no drone.
I keep thinking about this setup for mine...

I can say that as loud as glasspacks are, I have never experienced any drone with them whatsoever. I had 2 cherry bombs on my jeep, dual exhaust side pipes and a V8. Sounded hella loud, esp since the pipes may have been 4ft long.

Not to sound ignorant, but by "drone" yall mean that resonating sound inside the cab, right?
