TPS setting, I'm having no luck !

Hi all ( again ), 1990 F250 IDI with a rebuilt E4OD transmission. I have posted about this before, but more about the TPS itself. This is about the voltages that others are running at with it ( trying to draw up an accurate position for the TPS ).

Just got the old girl running again ( apart from finding my brand new alternator is dead ), and I went for a little drive as I was previously trying to set the TPS right as I am getting anything from jumpy shifts and slow up change ( as in revvs climb to 3K before jolting into the next gear ) through to the error light flashing and limp mode depending on where I position the TPS.

Now I'm reading all sorts of ideas on what Voltage and position it should be on ( its a new TPS by the way, made no difference as I had hoped ) but some people say 0.2 - 0.9 volts is right. Others say 1.2volts is right and so on.Anyone have a fairly conclusive ( or confirmed good on their own ) reading that I can try ?

Eventually ( I hope ) I will hit the perfect position so I can actually drive the truck as it should be and not be squealing the tyres on every gear shift and going into a higher gear on kickdown rather than into a lower one.

Any thoughts and suggestions based on you're own knowledge and experience ?

PS) good reps on all replies

and here: Ford Fuel Injection » Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)...where did you buy the sensor? also, if you haven't already you should pull any stored codes.

Perfect info thank you !

Just to wrap this up though, my idle is at about 650 ( when warm ) is this about right for a 7.3 idi ?

Many many thanks ! Once my alternator is sorted I can get the TPS done as well.

Look see if there is still a sticker under the hood, may answer on your idle question

No sticker under the hood that I can find, but its been over here since 1997 and things have been messed with since. I think ( by the sound and tach ) its 650'ish when warm which is about right ( I read ).

Anyway, now I finally figured out why I was getting no charge off the alternator ( battery warning light bulb, ) I adjusted the TPS to about 0.95, and at first it was great, smooth ( really smooth ) shifts, and a little kick down, great - just as it should be. BUT, once warmed up, hard shifts and kickdown feels like 80,000lbs has been dumped on the back - I also get a mild heavy metal scrapping sound ( bit like rotating a hub with totally dry and messed up bearings ). No error codes as yet, but because its going this way only when warmed up - is the solenoid pack on the transmission a likely cause perhaps ?

Changing ATF Fluid in a E4OD and 4R100 transmission .: Articles Here is a link on changing the trans fluid, might be worth doing that.
You can also drop the pan, fit a new filter and drain the torque converter through the converter drain bung if you don`t want to do the flush.
Maybe readjust the FIPL sensor (TPS) to give 1.1v at idle.
