My truck seems like it takes a while to shift into the next gear. The RPMs get higher than I think is necessary. It is set at 1.22V at idle and 4.45 at WOT.
How should I adjust the TPS to make it shift a little sooner?
what rpms are you hitting between shifts?
you understand the load and amount of acceleration will determine when she hits the next gear right?
when i was adjusting my TPS after the ip install,i found the adjustments determined how long she held onto her gears before downshifting.i tweaked it so she can't lug,yet not so much that she wants to kick down on me like it did.
iv got her set nice for FE so when i see a large hill and im loaded i just talk to her to kick it down and she climbs nice.when empty (well,my empty = 8k lbs ) she hangs on to OD until it's clear it needs 3rd.
best way is to just experiment.give her a little tiny nudge, watching the volts.go just a tiny amount at a time and take her out.
find your happy spot.which way volts up or down made her hang on,or kick down..sorry.can't remember lol.won't take you just a min or two to figure it out though.real simple.
if your after lower rpms before up shifts......your taking off too fast for fuel economy anyway.
ease into the oil like it cost $4 a gallon.......oh it does.
screw the people behind you.they'll wait or pass.just pull over and let 'em go if they can't get by.that's what i do.no need to be inconsiderate in your quest for improved economy.
driving like granny...........it pays big these days!.
Here is what happens. I can punch it to the floor causing all kinds of cool smoke and things but she won't shift into second until she hits the red on the tach. I can baby her and she won't shift into second until 2500 RPM unless I let up on the throttle, then she will shift. I can just about control the shifting if I let off the throttle at certain points.
I don't understand why I need to be at 2400-3K with no load at all before this high-torque truck shifts. For daily driving, I don't see why it doesn't shift at 1600RPM. I mean, the torque is there.
your WOT is set too high.can you get it to read between 3.8 - 4.3V?
you want 1.05V - 1.1V normal.
after you adjust the normal/idle setting, you have to check to make sure WOT is still within specs too.it can be a little tricky, but nothing serious.if you cant get one correct without frigging up the other, then you need a new TPS (used to be called fipl.funny to see them still called this haha.it wasn't until i got my idi and started reading and seen 'em still called fipl's. )
is your TPS black or some other color besides gray? if so,just replace it,they were failure prone.(pre-'92.)
did you see the "what is a fipl" in the tech article section on OBN?.check that out.though i just summarized most of it besides the details lol.
Yeah, some people do call it an FIPL. It is easier for me to type TPS, though. It is the black style. I would buy a new one but $60 seems like a lot for a little box with a rheostat in it. I'll play with the adjustments and try to get it closer to spec. I did have to replace the torx screws that were holding it onto the pump when I installed it onto the new one. I don't know how someone can strip a torx screw that badly yet still have the mechanical ability to install a TPS. I have some 1/4" bolts and lock washers on it now and that seems to hold well.
OK, I adjusted it last night and it is at 1.07 and 4.07. It seems to shift a little sooner. Maybe I just don't know when it should shift and making up what I want it to shift at.
Not trying to hijack, but I put a new one on my truck I have idle set at 1.1 which is the max you want it, but I can't get WOT above 3.77 which according to spec is a bit below spec. I changed it with my ip change. It shifts a lot smoother than before, before I was geting neck breaking shifts.
I just adjusted the truck to 1.09V - 3.9V. It seems to be better than before. It has a little more ***** for the get up and go scenario. Shifts are a little earlier than before. 45 MPH kicks in OD at 1500 RPM; steady throttle. So much for thinking I have 3.55 gears. More like 4.10s.

If you have adjusted both front and back ends of the FIPL/TPS, then you will need to adjust the spade connector on your IP throttle shaft. It is on the driver's side and the the TPS hooks into it. Advance it clockwise about 1/16 a turn. There are usually two Allen set-screws that hold it onto the throttle shaft. Loosen them and advance it, then try the TPS adjustments again.
