I need help. I have a 83 f150 with a 302 that has a NP 435 4 speed transmission behind it. It is Grinding in all gears. I first thought it was the clutch but it goes into the gear when the clutch is in engaged. The problem is when you start to let the clutch out it grinds really bad and acts like its not fully engaged. But however it does not do it all the time. Does anyone have any ideas? Please Help.
Could be a worn shifter or shift forks not fully engaging the gears.
You should have an access panel in the floor of your truck. You can pull the stick and the top of the trans to take a look at those components. No messy transmission removal required.
Of course, if you find nothing wrong, then prepare for R&R.
You sure it's the trans and not the clutch worn out or coming apart?
When was the last time the clutch was done? And, how are the hydraulics? I also have 302/np435. Like 85e150six4mtod stated, the shifter forks might be the problem, i.e. broken.
