Was wondering what tires I should put on my X. Do a little towing nothing major. Live in South Dakota so it needs to be a good snow tire also. I narrowed my search down to two tires but am open to any suggestions. I found the Yokohama Geolander A/T-S and the Michelin LTX M/S2. Is load rating D good enough or should I pay the few dollars more to have the E load.
I would absolutely go with the E rated tire. I would highly recommend the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armour. I have 77,000 miles on mine and they are by far the best winter tire I have ever used. I will get at least 80,000 out of these, which is pretty good as far as I am concerned. Good luck on your decision!
I had the rugged trails and I found them to be a mixed bag. They were very quiet, wore very evenly, and would last. I would expect that well maintained, they could go 100,000 miles. BUT....
They were very very poor performance on the street when wet. the slightest amount of water would make them break loose when leaving a stop, and had terrible wet braking.
They also started crackinbg on me within 4 years of manufacture date. That meant that the tire failed long before I got the mileage out of them.
Since I tow, the above was of extreme importance. I eventually got rid of them for those reasons.
I wanted a all terrain tire to replace them and went with Goodyear Silent Armor.
The Silent Armor tires have been superb in all expectations, and they are a excellent tire for towing., are jsut wonderful in snow and mud, an do not break loos in the rain.
Hawk, since you say you need them for snow, between the two tires you mention, I would go with the Geolanders. If you are almost always on road and not a snow problem then the Michelens
Went to the Ford Dealership here in town. They are running a buy three, get one tire free plus a $100 mail in rebate through Ford. All said and done I pain $533.32 which includes nitrogen, valve stems, lifetime rotate/balance and road hazard. I think I did pretty good.
I picked the Excursion up tonight from the dealership. I should clarify that the fourth tire free is something they are doing special at this dealership, they said it is up to other dealers if they want to participate BUT the $100 rebate is a national add. My total bill before the rebate is $599.66, after $100 mail in rebate which I just submitted online at Ford website it will be $$499.66. The dealership is Sioux Falls Ford in SIoux Falls, SD 605-361-9601. THEY ARE SWAMPED from this sale. But all in all I am very happy got a real nice tire, looks good, E load and 17/32 initial tread. On the drive home down the interstate it ran real nice.
Now I am replacing the front upper and lower ball joints. Went with the XRF ball joints, waiting to get the via fed ex. spent $99 with free shipping. Can't wait to get them on!!!
