Hey guys. Hate to clutter the board, but I need some advise.
There is a truck for sale in my area, here's the specs
1997 F-350
-160,000 miles
-automatic trans
-2 Wheel Drive
-extended cab
-dually
-power everything
-alcoa aluminum rims
-has that thing behind the cab that bolts to the bed, made of fiberglass, not sure what it's called.
-5th wheel hookup in bed
-5th wheel vented tailgate
-says Mark III on the trim???
This morning was on the cooler side, maybe 55-60 degrees. It started right up with no smoke. No rust on frame, NO rust on body (even on the underside!!!), no oil spots on the rear axle, small common leak on bellhousing, paint is perfect, interior has those soft leather captains chairs and are in perfect shape, carpet is spotless, etc etc etc
The P.O. traded the truck and a big 5th wheel camper in for a RV. RV store is selling it. They are asking $9,000.00 for it.
Is it worth that much? I didn't think so.... it's only 2 wheel drive and an auto.
The Mark III is probably from a custom styling and interior option from Centurion, making it worth a little more.
I'd say $9k is a decent price (some people have bought 96-97 7.3's for $10-12k in good condition with similar miles) if everything looks great. Be sure to take the intake hose off the turbo and check the wheel for chips or too much up/down/side to side play (a little in and out is ok).
I'd start lower, maybe offer $6k and go from there. You can probably talk them down. Say things like "it's an older truck, I'll probably have to put money into it for repairs", "the auto has a lot of towing miles and will need a rebuild soon" and wipe your finger in the engine valley and get some of the gunk out of there and say "i'll need to fix that oil leak" (even though pretty much every 7.3 has gunk in there. Haha
That price is definitely in the ball park. I paid $8K for mine with 200K miles. It was is great shape, no rust, dents, no paint problems, ran great, interior was spotless. Most of these trucks in that shape around here sell for over $10k.
If you talked them down to $8K I would say you got a great deal. Good luck!!
Oh I will!!! There is oil all over the bellhousing too.
Sidenote: The son of the owner went with me for the test drive and we are about the same age. He told me they have a 96 with only 72,000 miles on it. They use it to tow around campers and 5th wheels on the lot. There "camping center" has a highway through it, so they are always moving stuff around. Thats low milage for a 96!
