Hey all. been trying to figure out what trans and rear I have. Its a 1965, with a 352, and a 4 speed granny trans. the door says trans...N, Axle...A9. I think its a 435 trans but the rear end is a rear loader. ?? Tag says limited slip but I have nothing else.

been taking pics and have matched this 3rd member to a dana 60. The ratio is yet to be determined. may be why the speedo drive gear is slick

N = New Process 435 4 Speed Manual Transmission.

A9 = Dana 60.2 / 3.54-1 / Limited Slip / 3,300 lb. Rear Axle Capacity.

So a rear loader dana 60 would be a factory install. Not a very knowledgeable guy about 3rd members so it took a while to See it was a dana. Dana rears are all rear loaders?

All Dana axles have an inspection cover. The original owner of your truck paid extra for Dana 60.2 as it was an option, as was the Dana 44.

The 9" rear axle was standard equipment, but was not available w/Limited Slip in F100's until mid-year 1968.

If purchasers specified Limited Slip, Ford usually installed the Dana 44, the Dana 60.2 was a heavier duty optional rear axle.

You also lucked out w/the 3.54-1 ratio...almost as hard to find today as Jimmy Hoffa.

Most F250's from this era have 3.73's and 4.10's. Most peeps would love to have 3.54's, but...
Glad to hear I got lucky sometime. You say 250s, This truck is a 100. dont know if that maks a difference or not.

Makes a big difference...because when I decoded A9, I goofed.

Your F100 has a Dana 60.2 rear axle / 3.54-1 / Limited Slip. It's not a Dana 60-was only installed in F250's.

I edited posts #2 & #5, corrected the info.

The speedo DRIVE gear part number (C3OZ-17285-C) I gave you in your other thread is correct.

The same 7T nylon gear was used in F100 and F250 2WD's with Dana 60.2 or Dana 60's with 3.54's and NP435's.

upon inspection I find the driver gear to be greenish in color with 6 teeth. the driven gear is tan in color and is marked and counted 19. Am I missing a tooth on the driver?

This is the problem when a truck is 45+ years old, parts get swapped around.

A PO (previous owner) changed the DRIVE gear, could be because the trans was swapped, or the truck now has P-Metric radials, or PO couldn't find the correct 7T gear.

1964/72 Ford truck Parts Catalog sez: 1965 F100 / NP435 / Dana 60.2 / 3.54-1:

C3OZ-17285-C (replaced C2OZ-17285-A & D) .. 7T nylon DRIVE gear, ID'd YELLOW or PINK

C7SZ-17271-C .. 17T nylon GREEN DRIVEN gear with 7.00-15 tires.

C7VY-17271-A .. 19T nylon TAN DRIVEN gear with 7.75-15 or 8.15-15 tires.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
DOTZ-17285-A .. 6T Nylon GREEN DRIVE Gear, 19T TAN DRIVEN Gear:

1970/71 F250 2WD or F350 / NP435 / Dana 60 / 4.10-1 / 6.50-16 tires.

tries are 31/10.50-15

That's the other problem. No Ford truck parts catalog lists radial tires until the mid 1970's and P Metric radials weren't introduced until the 1990's.

So, there is no way to get the exact combination of DRIVE/DRIVEN gears for the speedo to read exact.

Close is all you can get...because P-Metric radials are a different size (have a different profile) than the original bias ply tires.

Best I can find for a size comparison chart:

Tire Tech - Tire Size Conversion Chart

That puts the original tires between 29 to 30.5" in diameter, if I'm reading it correctly. Your 31s are said to be 30.5 by Tire Rack and others.

Do you have a GPS or can you borrow one to find out your exact speed?

Once you figure that out, and compare to your speedo reading, you can adjust the driven gear--probably by one tooth. IIRC one of ND's previous posts indicated approx. a 5-7 mph per tooth change in readings per tooth.

Once I get her back on the road that is after the new clutch, I can do that. Seeing as how I must take it in to have that done ( see my thread on diagnosis of knock), while I have a shop with a hoist and smarts, I would like to have the seals and the driver gear replaced at the same time. I'm thinking due to loss trans grease the drive gear wore out. The driven gear also should be replaced as it shows a lot of wear. yous guys are all rite. thanks for the help
