Im new to the diesel scene and would like some advise with increaseing mpg without compromising the life of the motor. If anyone can recommend cold air intake, turbo back exhaust with cat or no cat. Any help is greatly appreciated.
The biggest way to increase fuel mileage all comes from the right foot. Anticipate stops, coast when you can, no jack rabbit starts, keep rpm at or under 2000, keep speeds at 60-65 max, etc. Leave the stock air cleaner. It is good to 500hp and offers better filtration with less hassle than any aftermarket. You can get some mpg gains from both tuners and exhaust but it would never offset the cost. A larger truck muffler would be the cheapest way to go if it is just for mpg savings. I am running the MBRP 4" system and like it, sounds great, lowered EGT towing, probably slight mpg gains. I get the best mpg running the SCT with extreme tunes but have to keep my foot out of it - back to the first sentence. Tuners can be safe if you are not hot-rodding around all the time but should only be used with gauges to keep track of temps. I am sure others will have suggestions and this is just my opinion.
Yeah gas mpg is good because this is my wifes everyday driver, We have 2 kids of our own and 4 foster kids so gas is good. We also need it to pull a camper from time to time. is the egr delete a good investment or is it just a matter of time for problems i will upload my info on my ex it similar to yours as far as the look. so everyday driver for wife maybe 50 miles per week and camper pullinonce every 4 to 5 months 28 ft camper
It is good to keep the idle time down on the diesel. Also good to drive it hard occassionally to keep the vanes on the turbo freed up. EGR delete is a good idea, coolant filter is another good idea, and electronic gauges to monitor the difference between oil and coolant temps (I use the Edge Insight). If it gets to be more than a 15 degree difference the oil cooler should be rebuilt and you may be able to save the headgaskets. Lots of info on the 6.0 in the 6.0 forum. You may want to post their to get more responses.
Your EGR will be fine unless your oil cooler fails. Now, if you idle a bunch and don't want to clean your EGR valve then a delete would be a good idea. I just replaced my oil cooler and decided to keep the EGR, but I almost didn't. Take a look in the 6.0 section, many guys recomend using an ELC coolant. Theory is it will not clog your oil cooler up like the Ford Gold stuff.
Red Ex has some good info there. The only other MPG stuff that I can think of are things not to do. Some have reported better milleage with taller tires, but don't go wider if you are after MPG. Wider will create more resistance. Also, heavy tires will hurt MPG. A lift will drop milleage due to a larger profile causing more drag.
