Well boys, Im going to look at a 97 tomorrow. The question i have for yall is where on the turbo do i look for to see if its leaking oil, and where on the HPOP? Pardon my ignorance on the matter. I know just bout everything bout how the PSD works, but not where the parts are yet haha.
Take a flashlight with you. Crawl up on the bumper and lean over so you're staring straight down at the top of the motor. That's where you want to look for leaks. Many of the common leaks will pool oil in the valley, which is the top of the motor between the two heads, and buried under all the stuff that's mounted on top. Shine the light down in there looking for puddles of fluid. Might also bring a stick with a rag tied on the end you can poke down there to see if it comes back wet.
Turbo leaks will puddle toward the back of the motor. HPOP leaks will puddle toward the front. Don't forget to check underneath for any signs of drips.
Just look around on the hpop and down in the bottom of the valley. If its leaking you'll see oil down there. Could be fuel too of course from fuel pump/lines, etc. Any leaks will run out the pass. rear of the motor, down to the ground. The base of the turbo and pedestal are where the orings are located that I think you're talking about.
Okay, much appreciated guys! Its got a rebuilt tranny and 230k on the motor, and the body is pretty clean. Hes asking 9500. I think its a bit much and if everything checks out im going to start at about 7 i think...
Went and looked at it today. The motor ran good, buuuuuuut when u put it in 4x4 in the parking lot....ouch! Grinding from the differential, popping in the transfer case and in between those you could hear the ujoints creaking when she moved. And he was still trying to get 9500! So said have a nice day to that one.
On the rebound, im going to look at another one tomorrow. What bothers me is he told me that the PO did an engine swap, he has no paperwork for it and that the ODO reads 297k, but says the new motor has between 95-98k on it. I guess ill be taking him on his word??? Any tips on how to varify if those miles are in the ball park? Usually id see by the pedals and interior but that dont work in this case... any help yall could give is appreciated! And sorry for asking about 5 different trucks the last few days, but i appreciate all the feed back.
There is a nice looking 1994 F350 crew cab for sell in Wenatchee, WA. for $6000. OBO I don't anything about it, it's been there a while so there may be issues. I stopped and took a couple of photo's with my cell phone the other day. If I can get the photo's off of the phone I will post them if you are interested. The guys phone number is 509-630-2211

I took delivery of my truck with 19 miles on the ODO when I ordered it new. It's got 377k on it now. Just by looking at the motor, I've seen it at 98k and 375k and it looks and acts the same. I don't know of any way you could verify the miles on the current motor, but you could probably look at several locations do determine if the bolts had been messed with and the motor had been removed.
Remember, it's more about how well it's been taken care of than the number of miles. Good luck.
