Charging Red Optima Battery

Whats the right amps/ to charge red top optima battery? Is there a certain charger to use. The battery is 5 years old and not taking a charge very well. Ive tested the battery and its says 12 volts. But i try to start it the gauge aint much over 8.

I haven't heard of any special charging instructions for those batteries. Usually you do not want to charge the battery over 20 amps, but most chargers you can buy from the store are already setup to limit the current, making them dummy proof.

I believe from what you are describing, your battery is shot. As expensive as those optima batteries are, they are still vulnerable to the same failures as any other battery.

A 2 amp setting on your charger normally works the best.

At 5 years old it may be time to replace it. If you can, have someone use a load tester on it after charging it for 24 hours on a 2 amp setting.
