I am looking at buying a cheap battery charger that will charge 12 volt batteries over night. Most of these units have ratings such as 2/5/10 amps. Will a 2 amp trickle charge a lawn tractor/atv battery overnight?
Roughly, very roughly, batteries are rated in amphours. If "overnight" is 12 hours with a 2 amp charger a 24ah battery would be, approximately, fully charged. Most motorcyle/atv/garden tractor batteries are in this range. DO NOT leave a battery on a 2 amp charger indefinately as it will become overcharged and ruined. You must be careful with constant current chargers not to overcharge. There are better battery chargers for maintenance such as the "Battery Tender" brand and similar chargers.
They're not cheap, but they're sophisticated enough to not overcharge your batteries...you can keep them plugged in indefinitely. BTW: this is much preferred over letting a battery drain all the way down and then recharging it.
Another vote for the battery tender. Most of them also come with a fused pigtail that you can secure somewhere on the atv that makes charging a snap, just plug it into the plug. No removing seats and cowlings to get to the battery.
