OK so This truck rocks. Gettin 21mpg doing 65 with no load. I put a 24 foot enclosed trailer on back (bumper pull) 3800lbs, with a car at 4000lbs, and a motorcycle at 700lbs in it. Now im gettin 10mpg. I need to increase this mpg. Any thoughts ideas. Oh by the way only got 767miles on truck.
p.s. i do not want to void the warranty or th ford esp warranty
Just returned fro California with 12,000 lbs of 5th wheel behind me. With the 04 6.0 I got 9.5-10 mpg. The 6.7 does 11.5- 12.1 mpg. I use the same route same speed(60) every year. This is 1800 rpm in the new truck. MPG are according to the display screen. I don't know if it is accurate or not. I had 1200 miles on my truck when I left Kansas and I have 9800 on it now. There is no comparing how the two trucks pull the same 5th wheel. My truck is bone stock. I point out i am running 4.10 LS rear end. VERY HAPPY SO FAR!!!
What gear ratio?
I have the 3.31 and with 6,500-7,000 lbs will get in the low-mid 12's under 60 MPH.
Less than 1,000 miles is low, I say give it some time.
You've only barely began to break in that engine.
We got rid of our 6.0. Bought a 2011 f250 tuesday. MPG on dash says 11. I did math and got 10. My trailer is a bumper pull. I just want to increase mpg some how
Mine is the same as yours....I drove from SA to Austin yesterday unloaded, got 21 mpg doing 70-75, on flat roads..took back roads on the way back and got 18.0 or so, but with hills at same speeds. Last weekend, I pulled a 25' bumper pull TT (5,000 lbs) to South Texas and back and got 10.5 mpg (per the truck screen) doing 70 - 75 mph most the time. The 21 mpg avg I got yesterday is the best I've seen in 4,600 miles on the truck.

I have 18,000 miles on my 6.7 crew cab with 3.31 gears and I get a 12 miles per gallon average towing a 10,000 pound 5th wheel. I get a little more pulling a horse trailer that weighs around 8,000 pounds loaded with 3 horses. I have never gotten the 21 miles per gallon empty that other say they get but my freeway speeds are usually just under 75 miles per hour. I get around 18 miles per gallon at that speed empty. Overall this truck gets about the same mileage as my 2001 7.3 did with much more power. I have had absolutely no issues with my truck at all.
Mine has the 3.55 and 20" wheels. I've gotten as high 23 mpg empty driving 65-70 mph on long 300 mile drives.
At 75-80mph I get 18 mpg So slowing down 10 mph gets me an extra 5 mpg.
Towing mileage isn't any better than what my 6.0L got. I currently get 11-13 mpg depending on trailer and speed. And the weight of the trailer isn't really the factor that has the most impact. I pulled a LQ 4H trailer that weighed 16,000 lbs and got 11.5 mph, Switched over to similar trailer with out the LQ and empty of horses, only weighed 6000 lbs and got 12 mpg with 10,000 lbs less weight. So it was the wind resistence and rolling resistance that has more influence on mileage than the weight.
This engine gets good mileage if you can keep it at 1500 rpms and not do any start and stop. Add a load, increase the wind resistance with a tall trailer, run at faster RPMs, have lots of starts from stop signs or red lights and your mileage will drop.
When it all comes down to it, Ford is going to do everything possible to not cover any more than they absolutely have to. It would only void the powertrain warranty anyway. Everything else would still be covered for the 3/36 original warranty. Plus getting rid of the EGR and cooler is so benifincal to the engine. Putting all that soot back into the intake can not be good for any engine. The DPF needs cleaned all the time and the engine runs hotter to clean it, again can't be great for the engine.
The money you save on better mpg can go towards any possible future repairs. Keep in mind you may never have any problems and the warranty would have not been needed anyway. Either way your engine will run cleaner and cooler, 2 huge benefits to me.
This is my 7th brand new vehicle since 2000 and believe it or not, I've never had a single vehicle in for warranty work. A couple recalls, yes, but no warranty work. Granted the first 5 were GM vehicles but still.
I'm going to put 5-6,000 miles on this truck and say goodbye to the powertrain warranty. Better mpg, no more urea, additional 150hp/300+ lb ft, and lots of black smoke out of a 5" straight pipe is well worth no powertrain warranty IMO.
Goodbye to the warranty, yes, but HELLO to H&S Performance!!
I'm with Painted Horse. Air resistance is a killer. I have hauled some unreal loads of split oakwood, truck loaded to roofline and tandem trailer screaming with so much weight and still get better mpg. Than pulling 20 foot cargo trailer almost empty.
