I just got back from a long trip. Started off just over 1k on the odometer and drove 3,560 miles averaging 18.5 the whole trip, empty.
A few times I was at 19-20 but most of the time 17-18.
I did use the motorcraft fuel addative on every tank.
I know my F150 would have only gotten around 15 mpg on the same trip.
I am seeing about the same f-250 with 1600 miles on it. 17 average tankful with cetane boost. THe only weird thing was the trip home from the dealer i got 21-22 on mpg, then had reflash done when nox sensor was replaced at 145 miles and have never seen those numbers since.I know the truck is new and needs time to break in, but just weird that i saw those numbers on the gas from the dealer.

I agree that these trucks seem to get better fuel mileage the first couple thousand miles than they do later on. I'm pretty sure that has everything to do with the fact that you drive off the lot with a clean, never used DPF and clean EGR system. If you don't run the truck hard or do heavy towing, it doesn't seem like even an active regen can maintain peak performance. There are multiple things that factor into this, but I don't believe that the tank of fuel from the dealer is one of them.
MPG is always contingent on driving style, speed, and traffic. No matter if you are full or empty so don't get so concerned with trip A or trip B stats. The truck also calculates an average so there will be those 14mpg and 19 mpg events.
We buy these trucks because they are needed for business, wanted for convenience, or just wanted as a toy. Either way you go there is no way any of us are going to see "prius" like efficiency. This is my first full size truck. I got mine because I wanted it and my eyesight is failing. I want to be safe in my giant cage and have multiple-purpose duty convenience.
I used to drive a Ford Racing enhanced 2006 Mustang GT. My new F-250 would probably smoke that GT. All I'm saying is "there's no replacement for displacement".
