Correct me if I'm wrong but if the switch still moves the mirror to the left, up or down, I don't think the wire connection is bad. I also don't think the switch is bad but the motor assembly or wire connection, or maybe just a need of some lube here.
You can just remove the mirror itself (it snaps out) to access behind it without removing the whole assembly. However, to remove the whole assembly, you must remove the small triangular piece of the door assembly where the mirror mounted, partially remove/lower the door panel, remove 3 nuts that hold the mirror assembly onto the door, and disconnect the wiring harness to completely remove.
My opinion, snap the mirror off first and check behind it. You might save lot's of time and aggravation.
