Axle code mystery!
The thing I'm perplexed about is this "075" axle code. I've looked EVERYWHERE to find out what that means. Several repair books, this here site, extensive use of google-fu, and nothing comes up. Apparently, this either didn't exist or was some kind of special order.
All I know is, the gear is TALL. Several long highway trips of over 100 miles have netted me mpg's in the 25-27 range. This is absolutely no exaggeration. Does anyone have any idea what "075" is? Not knowing is driving me nuts, and not up very many steep hills.

You could crawl up under the truck and look for a buck tag on the axle, those usually have the gear ratio's listed on them. You might have to pull out the bolt that holds it on to read the gear ratio. Mine was about the size of a credit card and metal, on my '83 F150.
Mine is something like:
_________________________
WDRC (There are numbers here, can't remember em')
3 08 8 8 (more numbers go here)
_________________________
My 3.08 was covered up by the bolt head. 3 08 is the gear ratio, and if it was 3L08 it'd be limited slip. 8 8 is an 8.8 rear end. You're truck is probably a 9'' rear end and is pretty easy to spot. If it's a 9'', you'll have just a smooth differential looking at it from the back with a big hump, and no bolts on the side opposite of the drive shaft. If it's an 8.8 rear end, you'll have a differential cover on the back and the tag will say 8.8. 9'' rears were used up until about '83 where they started using the 8.8.
But I'm going to ask the OP to show me the VIN on that label.
If you're scared somebody is going to be able to hunt you down and kill or maim you - or whatever you might be aftraid of - by showing the VIN of the truck, then hide the last several numbers from us. Those are the Production Sequence Numbers, aka the Serial Number.
Anyways, here's the VIN, ctubutis: 2FTCF10E3CAA64379.

Well, there is something wrong there, I think it's the 11th character, I'm guessing it should be a C and not an A....
Pos. ---- 1-3) 2FT = World Manufacturer - Ford Motor of Canada, Ltd, complete vehicle 4) C - Class C 4001-5,000 pounds GVWR 5-7) F10 - 80/83 pickup F100 2WD 8) E - Gasoline-powered 300 cid 6 cyl 1V carb light duty 9) 3 - Check digit, varies 10) C - Model year 1982 11) A - Assembly Plant (nothing listed for A, I'm gonna guess C - Ontario Truck Plant) 12-17) A64,379 - Numerical sequence of assembly
In any event, I was mostly interested in the Series (positions 5-7) and the Model Year (10th position) just to verify, because.........
We begin OK, but I'll explain there is generally a space between the 2nd & 3rd digits of your axle code:

Also from the book:

Your code of 07 equates to a Ford-built 2.47:1 ratio, Capacity of 2.8M (not sure what M stands for but I'm gonna guess 2,800 lbs.), used in 1981/82.
OK, now the weird part....
OK, the third digit represents the front axle:

You've got a 5 in that position, and the book says that code in that position was used in 1983 only, and means the truck has power brakes.
This is what caused me to ask you to show me the VIN, I wanted to make sure you had a Model Year 1982 truck.
So, I will write this off as an error in the book (this isn't the only error) but will nevertheless ask NumberDummy to come and verify my findings (I hate it when I post wrong information).
Changing that A to a C (Assembly Plant, 11th position) makes the Ford Fleet VIN decoder (https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenan...ls/default.asp) happy, but I'm not entirely confident the mistake is there........
In any event, it looks like your rear axle code is 07 which is a 2.47:1 ratio which would explain your gas mileage.

Chris: I've decoded over 700 VIN's, Rating/Warranty Plates/Certification Labels for FTE members.
I have yet to see a 3 digit axle code with a space between the two digit rear axle code and the single digit front axle code.
It is defined that way in the general info section of the catalog (notice the circles), but not in the real world, as you can see above.
btw: C = Oakville, Ontario Canada Truck Assembly Plant.
The truck was assembled in Canada, but that doesn't mean it was sold there.
DSO 16 = Philadelphia PA Ford District Sales Office, where the original selling dealer ordered the truck from.

Thanks for the help, guys. You efforts and time spent on this are greatly appreciated. I'm glad to know I have the most awkwardly geared truck in northeast PA.
