Axel numbers ??
Hey guys. I'm trying to decipher the number codes on the metal tag attached to the differential cover on my 92. I called the dealer and 4-Wheell Parts and neither was able to help. They read: S836B and under that: 08 88 2A28. I know it's an 8.8 but other than that ?? Also, what is the best type of fluid to put in the differential? Thanks.

If the axle is origional, you can call the dealership with the axle code off of the door jam and they can tell what you have.
I have a couple of numbers for you though:
18 is a 3.08 ratio
19 is a 3.55 ratio
And I use synthetic 75W90 gear lube

If you look closer at that axle tag you will probably see a number 3 in front of that 08. That would make it a 3.08 ratio. The S836 B indicates it was made at the Sterling plant and the 2A28 indicates that it was made on the 28th day of January 1992. The 88 indicates that it is an 8.8 inch differential.

You certainly know your stuff mantta. That 3 was there, just a little covered with crud and close to the bolt. When I pulled the cover off, the fluid was very clean. No noticeable metal and the gears are nice and shiney. I like it. Thanks and I will check out the stores you mentioned
