I'm having a problem with my '80 ford f250. a few weeks ago, it started randomly dying at intersections, then, it either wouldnt start at all, or would start, run for 4 or 5 seconds and the die. and then sometimes, it will be running just fine, and i'll park for a little while and it wont start again. any ideas on what might be wrong?
When it doesn't start, remove a spark plug wire from a plug, insert a screwdriver into the boot, hold it near a ground while somebody tries to start the engine.
You should see a strong, blue spark each time that cylinder tries to fire.
Your symptoms sound like a dying electronic ignition module (mounted on the driver's side front wheel cover, a silver, sandwich-sized box) but this is assuming you have fuel (you have a mechanical pump so I'm assuming you do) and there are no other problems (distributor pickup, wiring, etc.).
Did you get gasoline before this starting happing? You could have water in the gas.
Like the others said, check for spark and fuel delivery. It would also help if you would
post what engine, trans and any other options your truck has such as dual fuel tanks.
Also if the truck hasn't been tuned up in a while look at sparkplugs, wires and also the
carburetor.

Truck was running fine before this happened. It has a 351 windsor, with a mallory promaster coil and distributor. it's not getting spark when it isn't starting. i have replaced the fuel filter and ignition module. it had dual tanks, but whoever had it before me, removed the front tank. i drove this truck for 4 months with no problems before this problem started. thanks all.
