ive been researching options for getting better cooling capabilities out of my 85 f150 300I6. this past weekend i was pulling a pretty steep mountain road unloaded in 2wd low gear, reached the top and realized i was boiling over and parked for awhile, refilled the rad and never had another problem the rest of the day. my buddy also had a f150 I6 EFI and overheated in practically the same spot. Coincedence? I think not! Anyways im considering all options, bigger radiator, bypass the fan clutch with a spacer (cant seem to find anyone that makes one for the I6) and the one that i actually like best is wiring in an electric fan. anyone done or know how to do such a conversion and is it worth it.
You need to get a controller and a fan (or fans) with a shroud. (Ebay, Lincoln or Taurus)
You'll need to upgrade to a 130A 3G alternator and find a minimum 40A relay to run this stuff. Inrush current can be 80-90A on high from what I've seen.
Figure you're going to be at least $300 in parts before you open the hood.
I would see how much a new fan clutch would cost. You probably have the screw-on type fan with the big nut? They usually also have larger option radiators at the parts store.
I used electric fans on my diesel, and there is a lot of wiring, relays, etc, and the stock alternator could barely keep up with the extra load. So I took them off, and made brackets and locked my old clutch fan together.
