Question about Chassis Saver.

I read through the instuctions and it has no mention of using a rust convertor prior to applying it to your frame like POR requires. My question is could you do this if you wanted to? Would it have any benefit if you did?

If there is no mention, then there is no need.

I have used Chassis Saver, and as I remember you are to get all the scale off, and forget the rest of the rust, in fact that is what gives it its tooth. The parts I treated that way 3 years ago, still look new, mind you they still havent been installed, but they arent rusting out in my garage. Beware though, the final finish is different, it will be shiny and smooth, but it has a funny metalic like sheen. VHT makes an "epoxy rollbar paint" that has the same weird color/shine apperance. I just readthe MSD sheet and this is basically re-branded POR15 or, if POR's patent has expired, an exact chemical copy of POR15. The make-up, properties and applications are exactly the same.

Therefore, be sure to either put it on well roughened metal, or metal that has been conditioned with some type of Phosphoric Acid or Phosphate solutiuon. These include: POR's Prep and Ready, OPSHO, Naval Jelly, etc. These products turn rust (Iron Oxide) into a black inert substance (Iron Oxite), but aslo etch any smooth metal areas.

If it's as good as POR (and why wouldn't it be if it;s the same!) AND it's applied properly, you'll have a killer product on your vehicle. Don't forget - becuase it's moisture cured, if you are going to save some for touch up later (easy to do!) pour it into a glass jar, put a piece of plastic over the top, then screw the top down. Keep it somewhere cool and dark - as it's UV sensitive.

Good luck!

You know, after all these years of using POR I never once thought about putting it in a glass jar. I've always put the glad-wrap on, hammed the lid down and threw it in the fridge. Awesome tip.

That is a good tip! I've been trying to figure out a good way to keep the leftovers!

I sure wish I would have thought about a glass jar, would have saved a sore arm from painting my radiator support with an inch wide brush to try and save as much paint as possible. (and then rushing into town for another can to transfer the paint into)

I used chassis saver on my bronco and had to do no more than clean off the dirt, and it still looks great. granted it hasn't left the shop in a year, but it has done really good against the dust!
