Guys, I love my EX and wan't to be buried in it. I have 175,000 on my 6.8. Engine still runs smooth and I have had relatively few problems ILO fords engineered failure items and screw ups. Realistically the undercarriage is simple and parts are easily replaced and my body (ex body) is like new. I'm starting to plan for a replacement motor and I'm wondering if anyone has done a big block and what blocks will bolt in with the least amount of fabrication. Carborated 460? It would be a cool thread!!!
I have been kicking it around to go with 460 with TBI kit !!!! use old school engine with auto trans in my x with 2wd much easier to convert. alot of 460's in the salvage yard in my area. Then real header and dual exhaust all the way back what a combination
Probably would be cheaper to just either do a full rebuild or replace it with a manufactured engine. Or if you want a major challenge you can try converting it to a 7.3 diesel.

I think it would be sweet to take the 6.8 and rebuild it but beef it up real nice. Bore .060 over. rebuild heads (because idk whats out there). its what i plan on doing with my buddies 6.8 when hes ready
My 6.0 went 13.77 at the track. Pretty impressive for moving 8000 pounds. After having a diesel ex I would never want a gas one let alone a 460. We have evolved well past the abilities of a 460. It was a great engine in its time but we have evolved. just my .02

Having owned an 88 F250 with the 460, 5 speed and 4.10 axles for 222k miles, it doesn't come close to my 04 V10 SD 6 speed 4.30 axles in power, fuel mileage or smoothness in driving. Keep the V10, rebuild it, maybe see what's available in tunes (5 Star is best IMHO) and you'll be money and power ahead.
460 is a great motor for gas, and I think gas engines work better for mudding and etc than diesels.... the 460 was used in a lot of big motorhomes and stuff so its plenty capable of moving something as big as the ex. I just don't think unless you build the **** out of it you will notice much of an improvement, and the 460 will suck down even more gas than your v10! a carb'd v8 would be pie to swap in though, just weld up some engine mounts and connect like 5 wires and youre done.
My V10 has 175k miles and I feel like it has a lot of life left. Runs smooth, no smoke, uses 1 quart of oil every 3000 miles, about 1/2 towing. I just put new plugs and coils on it. I hope it goes at least to 250k +
