Timing mark question

Timing mark question
I'm wanting to check the basic timing on my 1990 F250 5.8. On the front of the engine I see a metal pointer by the balance wheel but I also see a round "view port", for lack of a proper word, mounted right below the pointer. My question is: do you use the metal pointer to align the timing marks or do you align them with the round hole right below the pointer? Thanks!!!
