First of all, awesome forum. I've looked around a little and found a ton of neat builds. I'm excited to come around a little more often!
Secondly, I am putting an injected 5.0 HO in my 78 2wd. I have got the new motor in and am having problems getting the alternator brackets to line up. I put a new pump and timing cover on this new block(but are supposed to be for the 78), wondering if something is off. I tore the old one out back in June, and have it to my uncle so I don't have that one to compare to. Has anyone got any pictures of the mounting on a 78 302? Thanks in advance!
Are you saying you want to use the '78 alternator/water pump/ power steering setup on your 5.0? or is it just a 302? The 5.0 used a serpentine belt and reverse rotation pump, etc., etc.
Are you running the 5.0 fuel injection?
If you have a 302 and want are just trying to figure out the alternator mounting you can look at the info I have on my website (The Street Slammer Project EFI conversion) under the efi upgrade. There are a couple of pics on the left that might help.
Im wanting to run the 78's vbelt alt and ps. The timing cover was cracked on the HO, I bought a new one for the 78, blocked off the fuel pump location and got a high flow pump also for the 78.
You can bolt the top bracket with the long bolt through the top of the alt to the head and then just swing the other side around to line up with the bolts on the water pump. Two of the water pump mounting bolts are what hold the alt bracket in place too. The bottom bracket for belt tension adjustment gets sandwiched between the water pump and the upper alt bracket. This is the only picture I have, it's my 77 but your 78 should be the same.
EDIT: Just to add 302 and 5.0 are the same thing. Yes they used different accessories and accessory brackets, but the blocks are the same.
Thanks alot for the reply. Yeah I know they are the same, the mustang motor is more commonly labeled a 5.0, and the older ones more so a 302. That was why it was worded that way .
I'm wondering if that high flow water pump I bought (vbelt regular rotation) has different mounts than I need for that stock alternator bracket.. Seems like the bends aren't right

and the 5.0 is a reverse flow because of the serpentine setup so you have to change the front cover and water pump but internally they are the same, well except most 5.0s have a roller cam so maybe externally they are the same

Yea you're right when most people say 5.0 they are referring to a roller motor.
You don't have to change the front cover, because I didn't when I converted mine to a serpentine set up. I just had to use an 87 Mustang GT water pump that is reverse rotation and has circles on the backing plate so it doesn't care if its on a newer or older timing cover.
To the OP here's a pic I found on another website should give you some direction. The water pump shouldn't matter since like I said the bracket uses water pump mounting bolts.
Something is off. If I mount to those two spots on the pump, the big bolt doesn't line up with the one on the head. Is there supposed to be a bracket mounted to the head??
