Has anyone ever done a conversion (I'm sure someone has) from regular cab to Supercab? I have a 96 RC 4X4 Shortbed that I really want to keep for a long time, but I really need the extra room of an extended cab. I've priced a cab (w/o doors) at $600 and I really can't see that it should be real tough to stretch the frame. I have a buddy who is a steel fabricator that should have no trouble doing it. After that it should just be a matter of extending the fuel lines and buying an SC drive shaft. (Is that one piece or two?)
My neighbor has a 95 SC that I should be able to use for reference.
I just wanted to get a feel for what you guys thought and if anyone has done it.
It's a good sized project. If the truck is 4wd the D/S a 1 piece, if it's 2wd it has a two piece. I suggest you get a ford dealership manual, I got one and it's about 3" thick, good book. I got it off ebay, mine comes from 95. You can obviously stretch the frame safely (limos) so I don't see why not. I don't see any major complications. Taking the cab off is going to be a pain in the butt, but it's worth it right!
You need to remember that there's more to it than the fuel lines. There's also brake lines, tail light wiring, exhaust pipes, and emergency brake cables. Also, be aware of cab and bed clearances. I believe the minimum clearance between the rear of the cab and the front of the bed is 21 mm. The Ford manual is definitely something you'll need. Even a chilton's manual has this info.
